Prince William and Prince Harry, who were once quite close, have reportedly not been on talking terms for two years now. As tensions run high, William recently made a subtle swipe at Harry during his first visit to his brother’s former regiment base. During his interaction with the soldiers, William made a rare comment about families, which is believed to have hinted at the ongoing royal feud.
William, as the Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, visited Wattisham, Suffolk, on June 4. The role was initially reserved for Harry before his royal exit. In 2024, King Charles, in what was dubbed a controversial decision, bestowed the honor upon the Prince of Wales. According to the Daily Mail, William asked the soldiers, “Is the pace of life good at the moment [?]” When one of them replied it was ‘a mixed bag,’ the heir to the throne inquired, “Families okay? See you enough? Some of them might not want to see you that much. It's a mixed bag sometimes.” He further added, “It's good to take it out on a punching bag.”
As per People magazine, his remarks caught the attention of royal watchers who argued it was about Harry and Meghan Markle, whom the Prince last met together during the state funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth in 2022. As for Harry, William is reported to have last met his brother during the memorial service for their uncle Robert Fellowes in Norfolk. The two allegedly did not share a word whilst in attendance. An attendant told The Sun, “William and Harry were both there, but we never saw them speak to each other, and they were keeping their distance.” Moreover, while Harry recently mentioned his desire to reconcile with his family, it allegedly did not sit well with his brother, as he addressed his father’s illness — a move that only re-ignited public concern over the King's health.
William, during his recent visit to the regiment, was otherwise seen in high spirits. Taking to his and his wife, Kate Middleton’s, social media handle, the Prince shared how happy he was to have met the soldiers and their families. Sharing a carousel of pictures from his time at the base, he also wrote, “Very impressed by the relentless commitment, physical capability, and mental acuity on display at the combat PT session. An excellent reflection of the Army Air Corps’ readiness and professionalism!” He further thanked them and their families for giving him a warm welcome and for ‘everything’ they do for the nation.
For the unversed, Harry has more military experience than William. The Duke of Sussex was a trained Army Air Corps pilot who also served with them during their second tour in Afghanistan. On the contrary, William, as a trained military pilot, was serving with the Royal Air Force’s Search and Rescue Force. He also has experience as an Air Ambulance pilot. The two brothers retired from their respective military jobs to be full-time working royals.
