Prince Harry is allegedly planning to change his surname from Mountbatten-Windsor to Spencer. A friend of his revealed that the Duke wishes to adopt his late mother, Princess Diana’s, maiden name to distance himself from his royal roots. As the news broke, royal watchers didn't hold back, urging Harry to move forward with his name change as 'he wouldn't be missed.'
Harry reportedly approached Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, to advise him on his decision. His friend told the Daily Mail, “They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step.” As the allegations went viral, the Daily Express conducted a poll from June 2-3, 2025. As part of the poll, 2,992 readers gave their opinions on whether the Duke should be allowed to change his surname. Surprisingly, a majority of 52% [1,564 votes] voted that Harry should be permitted if he so wishes, while 43% [1,281 votes] opined otherwise.
The Daily Express also reports that fans took to the polls' comment section to share their two cents on the matter. A royal watcher commented, “Name change and a permanent FO. Won't be missed!” Another echoed, “Sounds like [Harry] really does want to distance himself from the royal family.” Meanwhile, a fan who voted in his favor penned, “Good idea. Send him a deed poll, someone.” As the comments poured in, one opined, “So delusional. He actually believes that he is missed and that someone will be upset.”

Daily Mail’s royal editor Richard Eden, who first broke the story, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), igniting a firestorm. In response, a royal watcher opined, “Honestly, it makes no sense. His situation would be worse. No Prince, no Duke of Sussex.” Another commented, “Let him! The farther away he is from the royal family, the better!” A critic highlighted Meghan Markle’s alleged penchant to be like Diana, and said, “No doubt Meghan’s desire to be another step closer to being Diana 2.0.” In a similar vein, a person penned, “This is about making their daughter...Princess Diana Spencer? Just when you think they can't stoop any lower.”

Royal author Tom Bower was the first to allege that Markle had “decided her real object in life was to be Diana.” Echoing his claims, royal expert Charlotte Griffiths told GB News, “I can't think of another reason why you'd want to suddenly become a Spencer. It's quite a serious title, Mountbatten-Windsor.” She also believed that Harry’s alleged surname change would "really hurt his father’s feelings." Mountbatten-Windsor is a surname available to descendants of the late Queen Elizabeth and her husband, the late Prince Philip. Philip had adopted the surname in 1947, when he became a British citizen and renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles, after marrying the Queen.
