Prince William Offers a Rare, Emotional Look Into the ‘Worst Pain’ of His Life
Prince William is a proud advocate for mental health, encouraging conversations around grief and overall emotional well-being.
As a longtime advocate for mental health, Prince William has spent a lot of his public life breaking the stigma around grief and emotional well-being. Rather than adhering to the family's historic "stiff upper lip" approach, he frequently uses his own lived experiences to guide others through dark times. His latest effort—supporting a major new initiative for bereaved families in the UK.
As per HELLO!, in order to mark the merger of Child Bereavement UK and Winston’s Wish, Prince William released a poignant statement reflecting on what he described as the most heart-shattering form of suffering. The Prince, who has served as patron of Child Bereavement UK since 2009, shared: "Grief is the very worst pain any child or parent will ever endure, and while we cannot prevent these losses, we can ensure that every possible type of expert support and care is given, to help rebuild the lives of those affected." He added that over his 16 years as patron, he has witnessed firsthand the "life-changing impact of their work" and how their compassion protects the long-term well-being of grieving families.
His message got even more of a personal touch as he praised the decision by the two charities to join forces. William shared, "I have also seen the growing need for support of this kind, and it is because of this increasing demand that I am delighted that Child Bereavement UK and Winston’s Wish are joining forces to expand their impact.” While reflecting on the possible outcome, he continued, “They have recognized that together they can do so much more, and I commend them both for taking this bold step to reach more people and help to reduce the long-term challenges that unresolved grief can cause." The merged organization will continue operating under the Child Bereavement UK name while expanding training and support services for grieving families and professionals.
William's comments carried particular resonance given his own experience of bereavement. The future king was merely 15 years old when his mother, Princess Diana, passed away after an unexpected car crash in Paris in August 1997. Diana's death led to an extraordinary global outpouring of grief, with her funeral watched by an estimated 2.5 billion people worldwide. The picture of young Prince William and Prince Harry walking behind their mother’s coffin continues to be one of the most poignant moments in modern royal history.
As for Child Bereavement UK, it also holds special significance for William, as it was founded by Julia Samuel, Diana’s close friend. While speaking of William’s involvement with the charity, Samuel told You Magazine, “He has deep empathy that really comes across, which is why people feel better for meeting him. He has the genuineness that Diana had. They can see it in his face and hear it in his voice. He is warm but very direct, just as she was."
