Prince Harry's 'Staggering' Legal Bill Threatens to Plunge Him and Meghan Into Financial Ruin: Source

Prince Harry took on the British press. Now, he and Meghan Markle could end up paying millions.

Prince Harry faced a major legal setback on Tuesday when the High Court ruled against him and a group of fellow high-profile plaintiffs in their privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Ltd (ANL). The sweeping defeat has reportedly exposed the group to a potential combined legal bill of around $66 million (£50 million), threatening to further strain his already delicate finances. On top of Harry and Meghan Markle's $5 million-a-year security arrangements, staff and travel expenses, and business deals already hanging in the balance, sources claim that the latest blow could prove to be their costliest hit yet.

On his Substack, Naughty but Nice, royal columnist Rob Shuter spoke to various insiders who didn't mince words while describing the Sussexes' upcoming financial difficulties. One said, "This is the verdict that could change everything. Harry has spent years—and millions—trying to take on the British press. Instead of vindication, he may now be left with a staggering legal bill." His case against the publisher of the Daily Mail was his last remaining lawsuit against a British newspaper, with Justice Matthew Nicklin ruling that the Duke's allegations lacked merit and proper evidence of unlawful information gathering.

Under the UK's rules, the Duke of Sussex would have to cough up millions once legal fees and trial expenses are calculated. This does no good for him and Markle, who already spend a fortune on their private security, staff salaries, and travel expenses, without the support of the royal family after stepping down from the institution. A source argued, "People think Harry and Meghan have unlimited money—they don't. They've earned a fortune, but they've spent one too. A financial hit of this size changes the conversation overnight." Meanwhile, a palace informant stressed, "No one is saying they're [Harry and Markle] broke tomorrow, but blockbuster paydays have slowed while the legal bills keep coming."

That being said, an insider clarified that the hardest blow was that the case was never just about the money. They spilled, "Harry wanted to prove he was right. Instead, he walks away with a major legal defeat, an enormous bill, and critics convinced his war against the press has finally come at a devastating cost." The fallout may ultimately force the Sussexes to reassess their lavish lifestyle in California and come up with new strategies on how to sustain it.
