Even decades after her passing, Princess Diana remains a central figure in the lives of her sons and perhaps the one person who could have bridged the deep divide between them. As the 30th anniversary of her death approaches, in 2027, Prince Harry is reportedly hoping the milestone will bring him and Prince William together in her memory. Harry is said to be 'desperately' keen for William’s involvement in a special project honoring Diana, one that he feels is exactly what their mother would have wanted.

The Duke is expected to bring the Invictus Games back to the UK in 2027, the same year as the anniversary, with reports suggesting there may also be a documentary marking the occasion. “Remembering Diana on the 30th anniversary of her death is also very important for her boys, and Harry is keen to mark it together,” a source told Closer.

According to royal biographer Andrew Morton, there’s 'no doubt' Diana would have stepped in to help her sons mend their fractured bond. “Diana always used to say she had two boys for a reason, the younger would be there to support the older in the lonely task as future King,” Morton explained to PEOPLE. “There is no doubt Diana would have tried to act as a peacemaker between them. If she had been around, they would have worked things out in a different way.”

But despite Harry’s hopes, insiders claim William remains reluctant, particularly if Meghan Markle has any involvement, the Royal Insider reported. “Harry desperately wants his brother’s involvement, or at least his blessing,” the source said. “And he wants to be able to return to his homeland without fearing tension or drama, as he strongly feels it’s what their mother would have wanted. But William is hesitant. He doesn’t want Meghan anywhere near a project about Diana. For him, it should only be about the brothers. William’s still hurt by the public attacks and sees no reason to patch things up on Harry’s timetable.”

Back in 2021, William and Harry briefly set aside their differences to unveil the statue of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace. But since then, the rift between the brothers has only deepened, with tensions spilling over into their respective families. Reports of a strained relationship between Kate Middleton and Markle have persisted for years, fueled in part by Markle’s bombshell Oprah interview, where she claimed the Princess of Wales had made her cry before her wedding. She said at the time, “It really hurt my feelings."

However, those close to Diana believe the late Princess would have likely appreciated Harry speaking his mind, even if it has stirred controversy. As royal author Ingrid Seward once put it: “I think she would, I’m guessing, that she might have been quite proud of him for speaking up and saying what he thought, because that’s what she liked… She liked to say exactly what she thought and then deal with the consequences afterwards.”

For Harry, the project might not just be about honoring Diana, but also an 'extended peace offering', and a chance to mend things with William. The question is, if William feels the same.
