Prince Harry and Markle Meghan's Powerful Message for Recovering Addicts Revealed
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had their hands full on day two of their Jordan visit, with multiple health and community support engagements. On February 26, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex kicked off their day at World Central Kitchen, followed by a visit to the National Centre for Rehabilitation of Addicts. And how did they play their part in supporting those in recovery? With handwritten notes, no less. After interacting with several patients, they wrote empowering messages on sticky notes, praising their efforts to make positive changes in their lives.
The rehab facility operates as an outpatient treatment center, providing withdrawal support, counseling, and psychological help. As per PEOPLE, while chatting with the patients, Harry said, "I want you guys to know there's no shame in having an addiction; it stems from something else, which is an emotional pain—you're very, very brave to come here into the hospital." As part of their visit, the couple was also invited to share handwritten notes to support those in recovery. Harry's read, "It's ok to not be ok. Trust each other. Congratulations on your recovery." Meanwhile, Markle penned, "Congratulations on your dedication to your care. Wishing you continued healing and happiness.''
Markle and Harry did not stop with their show of support with the notes, as they personally witnessed patients in treatment and offered kind words of advice. While speaking to a recovering addict using a rowing machine, the Duke asked if the man would continue exercising when he leaves the center. Upon receiving a positive answer, he joked, "New habits, good habits rather than bad habits—we all have bad habits." He also told some of the patients, "What you need to do is use this experience and go back into your communities and help other people who are in a similar situation."
Following the visit, the Sussexes joined a WHO delegation to meet female leaders at the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development. It was particularly a positive experience for the Duchess of Sussex, who has been steadfast in promoting women's leadership, gender equality, and community leadership. The Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development is an NGO that promotes sustainable development through community development centers. Since its inception in 1977, it has been overlooked by Princess Basma Bint Talal, the aunt of King Abdullah of Jordan.
As for the Sussexes' two-day trip, on day one, the director of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warmly received the couple on the steps of their office in Amman. He welcomed Markle with a formal kiss and hug and embraced Harry. It is understood that Buckingham Palace officials were informed of the trip in advance, which surprisingly comes a few days after Prince William's diplomatic visit to Saudi Arabia. The Sussexes' visit may also ruffle some feathers with the Prince and Princess of Wales, who have regularly visited the country, most recently in 2023.
