Prince George's Godfather Recalls Being 'Hauled Out of Retirement' to Chaperone Godson—and What Surprised Him
Prince George's godfather has shared rare stories about the future King, revealing what he's really like behind palace doors.
Prince William and Princess Kate are known for keeping their children out of the spotlight as much as possible. So, whenever someone from their inner circle shares a rare insight into the young royals, it is bound to get people talking. This time, it was Prince George's godfather who revealed what the future King is really like behind palace doors.
Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton has a long connection to the Royal family as he was William and Prince Harry's principal private secretary from 2005 to 2013. His bond with the family remained strong even after that, with the Prince and Princess of Wales naming him one of George's godparents. In a recent interview with The Times, he looked back on those years and shared one memorable story about George.
The former aide had already retired before George was born in July 2013, but he was called back for one more royal job, and it was during King Charles' coronation in 2023. As he jokingly put it, he was "hauled out of retirement to be the herder of cats." Those "cats" were George and his fellow coronation pages, Queen Camilla's twin grandsons, Gus and Louis Lopes, her eldest grandson, Freddy Parker Bowles, and her great-nephew, Arthur Elliot, along with a few family friends and cousins of the King.
Recalling the experience, Lowther-Pinkerton (better known to the royals as 'JLP') said he spent a week with the boys before the coronation. He revealed, “We had such fun because we had to do our business, but then we went and looked at the Imperial War Museum. They were charming boys, all of them, really charming. So well behaved, totally different from what I was like, you know. I’ve been sort of a scallywag.”
As George is soon to become a teenager, Lowther-Pinkerton finally wants to step up as a godfather. He said, “It sounds awful, but I’m a better godfather when it comes time to have a bit of fun.” He explained that he has had "huge fun" with his other godchildren as they have grown older and hopes the same will happen with George.
The former SAS soldier took on several key roles during his years with the royal household. He managed William and Harry's military careers and also helped plan William and Kate's 2011 wedding.
After months of deliberation and assumptions, it has finally been revealed that George will be attending the prestigious Eton College in September. He is currently finishing up at Lambrook School before heading to the same boarding school his father once attended. Even though he will be boarding, the school is just a 15-minute drive from home.
