Not Charles or William — It Was Kate Middleton Who Finally Cast Out 'Disgraced' Uncle Andrew
The Royal Family is currently working overtime to control the mess left behind by Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his endless string of scandals tied to Jeffrey Epstein. The latest release of over three million files by the Department of Justice (DOJ) has only added to the mounting troubles, sending shockwaves through Buckingham Palace. It has also triggered a significant shift in their strategy—a move that a royal expert feels was spearheaded by Princess Kate.
Writing for The i Paper, royal expert Katie Nicholl has suggested that the unprecedented Palace statements signal a “panicked Palace in firefighting mode,” with the Princess of Wales emerging as a key driver behind the family’s attempt to finally cast out the ‘Andrew problem.’ According to the expert, the double-pronged PR offensive seen this week, where both King Charles and the Waleses issued public declarations within hours of each other, was no coincidence but a well-thought-out move, allegedly championed by Kate.
In her assessment, Nicholl notes that the Princess of Wales has been “a voice of reason and calm authority behind the scenes.” She further opined, “Catherine is understandably keen that she and William do not face a similar burden when it is their time to reign…any affiliation with William’s disgraced uncle would be deeply damaging to their reputations and philanthropic values."
The ongoing matter isn’t just about public statements, Nicholl argued, but more about physical distance. She noted it was, in fact, Kate who strongly pushed for the former Prince’s relocation from Royal Lodge, his home for more than two decades, pointing towards the 'problematic optics' of having him as a neighbor close to their 'forever home,' Forest Lodge. While the Prince of Wales is said to be concerned about his uncle’s well-being and mental state, he’s also ‘frustrated’ and ‘angry’ by how Mountbatten-Windsor’s scandals are dragging the Crown’s reputation through the mud.
The urgency of the situation also stems from the sheer volume of new information. With allegations now surfacing that Jeffrey Epstein may have flown women to the UK, specifically for the former Prince, the ‘never complain, never explain’ mantra of the late Queen Elizabeth II is no longer viable. “While Queen Elizabeth II had a propensity to compartmentalise and often turned a blind eye to her son’s antics, Charles cannot adopt the same strategy,” Nicholl wrote. The relentless focus on the Andrew-Epstein crisis has also overshadowed the charitable work and official duties carried out by other members of the royal family. For instance, William’s recent diplomatic trip to Saudi Arabia was almost derailed by the scandal when he was questioned about his disgraced uncle, undermining the main purpose of the visit—to strengthen ties between the two nations.
The overarching sentiment in Nicholl’s analysis is that Princess Kate is playing the long game. She is determined to ensure that when she and William eventually take the throne, they aren’t still answering for the sins of a previous generation. With more revelations allegedly on the horizon, Nicholl argues, Kate’s “cool head in a crisis is exactly what the monarchy needs.”
