On Friday, Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, was arrested from his Florida care home by the FBI a few weeks after being accused of possessing child s*x images in his former home in the Philippines. The US Department of Justice has recently released a statement revealing that Thomas has been “charged with one count of possession of child pornography”.

The Philippines authorities opened an investigation into Thomas after his son discovered illicit images at his former house and went to the police. Revealing further disturbing details, the US Department of Justice alleged that the retired lighting director “kept child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including s*xually explicit photographs of himself with prepubescent girls, in two Los Angeles-area storage units he rented for nearly two decades”. Providing details about the searches that eventually led to Thomas’ arrest, the authorities reportedly searched Los Angeles storage units that he rented since 2008.
Reportedly, the agents “seized approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books that contained suspected CSAM (child s*xual abuse material)”. After the arrest, Thomas will appear in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa today, at 13:30 ET.

FBI director Kash Patel stated that authorities “moved quickly, identified and located the explicit material, and arrested” Thomas in Florida. “Mr. Markle allegedly targeted innocent children and sought to steal their innocence through his criminal actions,” he said. Patel further mentioned that the FBI will use “every single resource” at their disposal “to protect” innocent children. “Any predator who targets children will have zero safe haven in this country, or anywhere they try to hide,” he added.
The Duchess of Sussex released a statement when news about her father first became public. Her claims prompted an internal investigation at the Met Police and exposed a serious lapse in how they handled the 2019 letter, which reportedly detailed allegations against Thomas. She has not made any official statement about Thomas’ arrest yet. The Royal Observer has approached a spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex for comment.

The Sussexes are set to travel to Brussels next week to open the Lost Screen Memorial in the European Parliament.
