Meghan Markle Was ‘Horrified’ by Palace Life That Felt 'Like a Prison' For Her, Claims Expert
Life inside Kensington Palace often carries an air of fairy-tale intrigue, and one would imagine it to be a straight out of a Disney movie, but Meghan Markle found far less charm than the world imagined. According to royal biographer Tom Quinn, the Duchess once likened the experience to being 'a kind of prison', a contrast to the rumours that swirl around the life of royals. It revealed the gulf between myth and reality, especially for someone entering this world from the fast and free pace of Hollywood.
Quinn writes in Kensington Palace that Markle arrived with optimism, initially dazzled by the tradition and pageantry. But the thrill was apparently short-lived. The reality of being driven in and out of a heavily guarded residence for endless official duties quickly sank in. What looked serene and regal from the outside began to feel restrictive from the inside. The biographer suggests she was 'horrified' by this, and that the 'initial glamour' wore off faster than anyone around her expected.
And the solution for her, at least on paper, was a move. Markle and Harry left Kensington Palace for Frogmore Cottage in Windsor only months after their wedding. It was a gift from the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the couple hoped it would offer the calm and privacy they felt was slipping through their fingers. But the change came with its own surprises.
The house itself underwent a significant renovation. One builder interviewed by Quinn claimed the aim was to turn the historic property into something resembling a “Californian condo”, perhaps to make Markle feel at home, and for the couple’s desire for a more relaxed home. Yet even before settling in, Markle was reportedly uneasy about the idea of living in relative isolation. She had said, “I don’t want to retire to rural obscurity.” Another insider also told Quinn, as he has mentioned in the book, “Meghan realised that living there would be like living in the Russian steppe.”
MailOnline cited a source who added that Frogmore’s remoteness made Kensington “seem like the centre of the universe”, which says much about how the duchess saw the shift. The couple had imagined that Windsor, tucked away from the capital’s relentless bustle, would give them respite from the press. Instead, it seems the quiet only amplified their frustrations.“As Meghan and Harry quickly discovered, their flight to Windsor did not mean an escape from the world’s enquiring eye,” he wrote. “Instead, it revealed to that world a lack of foresight.” What was intended as a retreat did not serve the purpose.
Earlier, Grant Harrold, a former butler to King Charles who knew both Prince William and Harry well, had shared a similar opinion. He had said that Markle soon realized that royal life wasn’t anything like the fantasy she had imagined. “I think the problem with Markle is that she went into the organization and she assumed that after watching all the Disney princesses that she thought it was going to be like that,” Harrold had said. As per Page Six, he stressed, “When you join the royal family, you are given rules and protocols to follow.” And it would seem those
