Meghan Markle Takes a Subtle Swipe at Royal Family — Reveals How She’ll ‘Rewrite the Public Narrative'

Meghan Markle doesn't shy away from taking thinly veiled digs at the royal family in interviews ever since she stepped down as a senior royal in 2020. She has often expressed having felt deeply hurt by the family's alleged mistreatment. In her recent interview on the Aspire With Emma Grede podcast, the Duchess didn’t hold back, taking yet another swipe at the royals. She revealed that if given a chance to 'rewrite the public narrative,' she would ask people 'to tell the truth.' She also shared that returning to Instagram after her royal exit gave her her 'voice back.'
Markle sat down for a candid conversation with her friend and fellow podcaster, Emma Grede, the CEO of Good American, on June 17. As reported by the Daily Mail, Grede asked the Duchess what she would do differently if she had the chance to rewrite her public image. Markle, alluding to her time in the royal fold, replied, "Yes, I would ask people to tell the truth." She shared that she dealt with her anger about the 'constant lies' spread about her by remembering advice from her friend Serena Williams. Taking another apparent dig at the royals, she added, "My dear friend Serena, she told me years ago: 'A lie can't live forever.' Eight years is a long time, but not forever." For the unversed, Markle's emphasis on the 8 years is how long it has been since she first began dating Prince Harry.
The Duchess further described times in her life where she "wasn't as empowered with [her] voice," and stressed that her return to Instagram, which she had left after becoming a royal, "was a great way to get [it] back." Grede and Markle also spoke about the downsides of fame, wherein Markle described it as having "peaks and valleys." She claimed she survived the pitfalls of fame with "a lot of self-work" as well as spending time with her children, hiking, and 'date nights' with Harry.
In the podcast, Markle also addressed her viral pregnant twerking video, which she had shared on Instagram to celebrate her daughter Princess Lilibet’s fourth birthday. According to USA Today, she said, "You have to be authentic...Did you see my Baby Momma dance?" The Duchess admitted to being unfazed by the criticism she received for posting it. She said, "That was four years ago, so it's also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there's still a whole life – a real, authentic, fun life – that's happening behind the scenes."

Markle has also alluded to her strained relationship with the royals during both her pregnancies in the penultimate episode of her own podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. She remarked, "I had a whole vision...and you fast forward... granted, I had a lot of external things happening at the time I had both pregnancies and both babies, but it was not the way I envisioned it." According to Tyla, her reference to 'external things' was seen as a subtle critique of the royal family and their treatment of her.
