Meghan Markle feuded with members of the royal family long before her 2020 exit. Since then, the Duchess of Sussex hasn’t shied away from throwing shade at her in-laws through interviews, clever social media posts, and now her podcast. In a recent episode of Confessions of a Female Founder, Markle took yet another veiled dig at the royal family by bringing up her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, sharing that many ‘external things’ affected both pregnancies.
Markle sat down with Kitsch founder Cassandra Thurswell for the penultimate episode of her podcast on 20 May. The women discussed the challenges of motherhood and the difficulties of balancing it with professional responsibilities. Markle said, “I will say for myself, especially when they are baby babies... the crying... before I was a mom, and I've always wanted to be a mom…I was 'Oh gosh, I'm going to give a speech with a baby on my hip.” Taking a swipe, she added, “I had a whole vision...and you fast forward... granted, I had a lot of external things happening at the time I had both pregnancies and both babies, but it was not the way I envisioned it.”
As reported by Tyla, the mention of going through ‘external things’ was a subtle critique of the royal family and their treatment of her. Markle was alluding, yet again, to how it led to her and Prince Harry’s decision to step back from their royal duties and pursue a new life in the US. Her guest, Thurswell, also opened up about the challenges of balancing motherhood and business. She said, “I had some really intense postpartum anxiety, my husband really had to step in, and this was when we were really growing quickly, and it was such a crippling growth period for me.”
During her conversation with Thurswell, Markle also opened up about how she likes to ‘show up for people.’ As per the Daily Mail, she explained, “Because that's been the undercurrent of how I like to show up for people, to have that still be ingrained in how I show up through the business, where the hero product really starts as a fruit spread.” She also praised female entrepreneurs who came from humble beginnings and hadn’t attended elite MBA or business schools.
The Duchess of Sussex has often expressed her love for motherhood on her podcast. However, this isn’t the first time she’s seemingly used her children to subtly throw shade at the royals. On the second episode of her podcast, Markle revealed what her ‘favorite title' was, which wasn’t a royal one. As reported by The Mirror, she told her guest, Reshma Sujani, “Now you have the title of mom. Just like me. Favorite title. Love it. Oh my gosh. I love being a mom so much. It’s my favorite thing.” The subtle dig came after public backlash over her still using her ‘Her Royal Highness’ (HRH) title despite having stepped down.
