Meghan Markle Faces a ‘Stressful’ Christmas Dilemma While Prince Harry Awaits a Royal Invite

Questions over whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will spend Christmas in the UK have intensified, and new reports now suggest that this uncertainty is weighing heavily on Meghan Markle. Prince Harry is said to be hoping for an invitation to the royal family’s Christmas gathering at Sandringham, though the Palace has not indicated whether one will be offered. The couple has not celebrated the festivities with the family since 2018, which adds to the weight of this year’s decision. With December drawing near, Harry and Markle remain caught in a position where they can neither commit nor fully step back, leaving the Duchess feeling as if she is walking a tightrope.

According to Closer, Harry’s optimism for an invite follows his visit to London in September, his first in nineteen months. During that trip, he and his father, King Charles, shared a quiet private tea at Clarence House in a meet-up that lasted for about 55 minutes. Those close to the situation believe the meeting gave Harry some confidence that a Christmas return may not be completely off the table. This shift in mood aligns with what the Duke of Sussex has said publicly over the past year. In May 2025, he told the BBC that he did not see a realistic path for bringing his family back to the UK after he lost his taxpayer-funded police protection.

Yet after the September visit, his tone changed noticeably, and he indicated while speaking to The Guardian that the idea felt closer and more possible than it had before. “This week has definitely brought that closer,” the Duke told the outlet. The shift mattered, particularly as the royal Christmas gathering is expected to look very different this year. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson are not likely to attend, and there is talk that Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice may also give the gathering a miss. With changing arrangements, Harry is described as “waiting to get the go-ahead” before finalizing his own plans.

For Markle, however, the absence of clear timing has created quiet tension behind the scenes. One insider told Closer, “The whole waiting game, and to have everything thrown into chaos by the royals, who still haven’t given Harry the courtesy of a date to work around, is beyond inconvenient.” They also remarked that the Duchess prefers a structured routine and finds it difficult to hold open weeks at a time. "She can’t just drop everything to fly over to the UK with Harry – to her, that would upend everything,” the source opined. While Markle is said to be feeling anxious, as a dotting husband, Harry is said to be trying to steady the waters.

The source pointed out, “Harry understands it’s stressful for her, and he’s always sympathetic, but he feels it’s crucial that she make a show of good faith. He wants her to push through, but it’s a tense situation, and it’s impossible for that tension not to overshadow everything.” Behind this, both know that one wrong move could reopen old wounds, and neither wishes to start the festive season on the back foot.

Whether the two will celebrate the holiday season with the royals remains up in the air, though Markle has already put her cards on the table by releasing the trailer for her upcoming Netflix holiday special. Her upcoming With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration is set to drop on Netflix on December 3.
