King Charles Knights Hollywood Icon Idris Elba for His Charity Work and Global Impact
Sir Idris Elba just received the highest honor for services to young people.
Sir Idris Elba has a nice ring to it. The Hollywood star received his knighthood from King Charles at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, in recognition of his services to young people in the New Year Honors. Elba looked dapper in a black coat and dark trousers for the monumental occasion.
In 2022, the newly knighted star founded the Elba Hope Foundation, which supports community empowerment, education, youth advocacy, and sustainable development. Last year, it was announced that he would team up with King Charles to create a documentary marking the 50th anniversary of the King’s Trust. The documentary is due to be released on Netflix this autumn. It will be a fitting follow-up to the Amazon Prime documentary Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision, that released earlier this year.
It’s certainly a full circle moment for Elba, as he was once the recipient of The King’s Trust (then-Prince’s Trust) grant at the age of 18. He had used the opportunity to attend the National Youth Music Theatre.
Along with Elba, Olympic champions Dame Jayne Torvill and Sir Christopher Dean were also knighted for their contribution to ice skating and voluntary service. The pair had won the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics for their Bolero performance. “We had such a great time, we were so happy with the tour and the fact that we got through it. It was a big thing for us to mark our career before retirement, and then receiving this award at the end of the year, it's just finished everything. It's perfect,” Torvill said as per BBC.
Actress and comedian Dame Meera Syal was also recognized for her services to literature, drama, and charity. The knighthood was a notch on the extensive list of Syal’s achievements. In 2017, she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and five years later, she received a BAFTA Fellowship, which is the British Academy’s highest accolade for an on-screen career.
Rotherham comedian Paul Elliot was made Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for charitable service. Windsor Castle was surely reverberating with joy and inspiration as such pioneers walked its halls.
