King Charles and Idris Elba Unite To Mark Major Milestone [Photos]
A Creative Push
King Charles III and Sir Idris Elba met at the Other Palace Theatre in London to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT). Elba, who attended NYMT at 18 with support from the Prince's Trust, now known as the King's Trust, interacted with students participating in musical theatre workshops aimed at providing opportunities for youth in the arts.
An Engaging Affair
The children from Birmingham's Core Education Trust schools took part in seminars aimed at increasing their self-assurance and improvisational abilities. Young actors from NYMT, many of whom attend acting schools or are employed professionally, talked to the King and Elba. Before attending a performance, the King posed for a group photo and cut a cake for NYMT's 50th anniversary. He met the staff and supporters and applauded them for their contributions to NYMT's success.
King's Dance Lessons?
King Charles surprised musical theatre students by sharing that he owns tap shoes during the celebration. Bill, an NYMT member, talked about the King's inquiry about tap dancing, saying, "He said he owns his own tap shoes, and we offered to teach him." Asked if a lesson was booked, he admitted, "We failed, but we will follow up."
Lessons On Shakespeare
The King advised musical theatre students that the best way to grasp Shakespeare is through acting. During a workshop, he inquired about their enthusiasm for Shakespeare and their experience with acting in his plays, emphasizing that acting is key to understanding the material. “The best way to understand it is to actually act it,” he said.
Praise From Students
23-year-old Xanthe described her performance warm-up for the King as surreal, highlighting a medley of Jason Robert Brown and Stephen Sondheim. Toby, 22, who taught a vocal warm-down technique to the King, expressed gratitude for his drama teacher and the King's Trust that gave wings to his creative dreams. Tochi, 18, who performed a solo, found the experience crazy and praised Sir Idris Elba and the King for their kindness, noting Elba's influence on her decision to join NYMT.
