Kate’s Latest Look Had Many Fashion Easter Eggs — and the Trendiest Statement Piece
Kate Middleton's stunning outfit and sentimental jewelry at Canterbury Cathedral seamlessly wove royal symbolism with modernity.
Kate Middleton's knack for blending regality with modesty in her outfits has cemented her as a global fashion icon. One day, it's a recycled coat that sweeps the sustainability industry off its feet, and the next, it's a hidden accessory that sells out within minutes. Her latest outing at Canterbury Cathedral on March 25 once again proved why she's the face of a global phenomenon that has brands flying off the shelves. Her stunning outfit, paired with sentimental jewelry, seamlessly wove royal symbolism with modern trends into a single look.
While Prince William looked dapper in a dark blue suit, it was his wife who stole most of the camera flashes in her elegant Suzannah London coatdress. But you wouldn't catch the Prince of Wales fretting, as her look carried a subtle tribute to his title. For those scratching their heads, Middleton's dress featured the Prince of Wales check, also known as Glen plaid. The pattern rose to prominence when King Edward VII was the Prince of Wales. Now, with William holding the title since 2022, inheriting it from King Charles after his ascension, the Princess of Wales has made a point to embrace it.
Another detail that royal fans may have missed was her $10K iconic pearl cluster earrings by Cassandra Goad. Middleton debuted them for Prince Louis's 2018 christening, paying a sweet nod to her youngest. A chic champion of rewear and sustainability, she has also donned them at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships and the 2024 Trooping the Colour. The brand notes that the clusters are inspired by cauliflower, set with diamonds in gold. And how can we forget her striking Juliette Botterill hat, crafted in ivory houndstooth straw. She is seemingly no stranger to commanding attention with her wide-brimmed hats; just ask Princess Anne!
And how can Middleton's look be complete without her co-signing a not-so-hidden accessory, which has the product selling like hot cakes the next day? Tucked in with her classy coatdress was a pre-crumpled black Chanel bag. As per Vogue, it echoed Matthieu Blazy's runway iterations this season, which appeared over-stuffed, slipping open, and purposefully disheveled. It just goes on to show her fashion-forward style, introduced with a hint of classic luxury. William's and Middleton's appearance was on behalf of the king, who traditionally skips installments of new archbishops.
As the Waleses arrived at the cathedral, they were warmly welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Lady Colgrain, who greeted them with a curtsy before exchanging handshakes. They joined several key officials, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, to witness the formal installation of the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Rev. and Rt Hon. Dame Sarah Mullally, who is also the first-ever female archbishop. This ceremony took place in front of around 2,000 people, and with this, Sarah has now become the first woman to lead the office in its 1,400-year-long history.
