Harry’s Thoughts on Archie and Lilibet Becoming Working Royals Revealed: ‘When They Grow...'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals in 2020 when Prince Archie was just a year old. A year after the couple left the UK and moved to California, they welcomed their second child, Princess Lilibet. While Harry and Markle are no longer working royals, a new report has revealed whether the Duke would allow his kids to work for the Firm. It claimed that Harry wants his children to grow older and decide for themselves if they wish a life as working royals.

The Guardian recently detailed Harry’s alleged efforts to obtain UK passports for Archie and Lilibet with the 'Sussex' surname and HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles. A source revealed that the Duke and Duchess reportedly feared that UK officials were dragging their feet because the passport applications included the HRH titles for the children. The publication hence alleged that Harry wishes to keep the HRH titles for his children so that when they grow older, they can decide whether they want to become working royals or remain out of the public eye.
An insider spilled that King Charles was allegedly not a fan of Archie and Lilibet having the HRH titles. They dished, “The King hadn’t wanted Archie and Lili to carry the titles, most of all the HRH, and the British passports, once created, would be the first and perhaps the only legal proof of their names.” They claimed that the delay in passports got the Duke so frustrated that he approached Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, for advice. Harry allegedly asked his uncle, “My family is supposed to have the same name, and they’re stopping that from happening because the kids are legally HRH, so if…this blows up and they won’t let the kids be called Sussex, then can we use Spencer as a surname?”
Sadly for the Duke, Earl Spencer strongly advised him against adopting the surname, fearing legal repercussions. Harry’s friend told the Daily Mail, “They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step.” Reportedly, the children’s passports arrived after six months, shortly after the Sussexes’ lawyers wrote to the U.K. Home Office, threatening to file a data subject access request.

While Harry wants his children to choose their own paths, Markle is reportedly worried that Archie and Lilibet would ‘blame her’ if they do not get the chance to be working royals. Royal expert Tom Quinn told The Mirror, “One of Meghan's few aristocratic friends from her time in the UK told me Meghan does miss some aspects of life in the UK and worries that her children will blame her if they never get to see their cousins and feel as adults that they have been deprived of what might have been a fun and meaningful existence in the UK as working royals.”
