Harry Is Done With Royal Trappings While Meghan ‘Chases the Shine,’ Claims Insider
At last week’s Aspen polo match, there were no formal introductions and ceremonial flourishes, and notably, no royal styling for the Duke of Sussex. Prince Harry was introduced simply as 'Harry Wales.' No Duke of Sussex. No HRH. Just a man showing up to play polo with friends. Those present say the change was not accidental and that Harry looked lighter for it. According to a new report from royal commentator Rob Shuter, who wrote on his Substack, a recent appearance in Aspen suggested Harry has made peace with a life stripped of royal trappings, even if his wife has not.
“Harry was introduced as Harry Wales, with no royal title mentioned ever or anywhere,” an insider told Shuter exclusively. “He was there to play polo with his best friend Nacho—no titles, just fun.” According to the source, Harry had deliberately sought a day without the baggage that usually follows him. Security kept photographers at a distance, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the prince, now far removed from palace schedules, spent the afternoon chatting, laughing, and blending in rather than standing apart. “He looked genuinely happy, like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders,” another source said.
For a lot of the royal observers who have watched Harry struggle publicly with his identity since stepping back from royal life, the scene must be exceptional. Stripped of formality, he appeared closer to the version of himself he has often said he wanted to reclaim. Meghan Markle, however, appears to be moving in the opposite direction. Shuter’s reporting suggests that while Harry has grown comfortable letting titles fall away, Markle remains deeply invested in the status they confer.
The contrast, sources say, has become increasingly visible. “You know I’m Sussex now,” Markle told Mindy Kaling during a moment on Netflix. According to insiders, that mindset extends beyond screen moments. At the same Aspen lunch tied to the polo event, Markle reportedly expected full royal-style treatment, including seating and reception that reflected her Sussex title. “Meghan thrives on the royal recognition—it’s everything to her,” one insider told Shuter.
While speculation continues over what a future reign might mean for Harry and Markle’s titles, insiders downplay the likelihood of any formal stripping, largely because it would achieve little.“The Sussex brand is now worthless, and taking the titles away would make William look petty,” a source said. “Harry doesn’t care about the trappings anymore. He’s done with it.” For Harry, the emotional break appears to have already happened. Markle’s relationship with royal status, by contrast, remains more complicated.
Having entered the institution later in life, she experienced its power. According to those close to the couple, that may explain why she continues to value the recognition Harry seems eager to leave behind. Watching the two navigate post-royal life side by side has made that divergence harder to ignore. “He’s finally free,” a close friend told Shuter. “Meghan’s still chasing the shine that’s long gone.” The irony, of course, is that Harry once clung more tightly to the very system he now appears happy to shrug off.
