Former UK Prime Minister Says The US Can 'Keep' Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have settled in the Montecito neighborhood since 2020.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have frequently found themselves facing massive scrutiny from top royal commentators and industry experts, especially due to some of their controversial decisions over the past few years. Critics have questioned everything from their business moves to their overall public image. Recently, former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss sparked fresh debate when she suggested that the United States is welcome to 'keep' the royal couple there. The remark has reignited discussions about the pair’s departure from royal duties and their current life in California.
As reported by News Nation, Truss spoke about the strained relationship between the Sussexes and the royal family, saying, “That’s really a matter for the king and the other members of the royal family, but as far as I’m concerned, you’re very welcome to keep them in California.” The royal couple settled in the Montecito neighborhood in 2020, hoping to embrace a quieter life. As of now, they live in an expansive, multi-million-pound estate, where they are raising their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, away from the constant attention of royal life.
While official reports suggest that Harry and Meghan are enjoying their life in the United States, some recent reports have mentioned that a few of their neighbors have expressed their disappointment about sharing the area with the royals. A US-based royal expert, Kinsey Schofield, spoke of this and said, "Some of the neighbors say they don't hate them, they just avoid them." As reported by the Daily Express, she added, "No one wants to be seen with them. It’s just a growing awareness that they’re takers with zero self-awareness. Everyone’s exhausted by them."
Assuming the reason behind this, Schofield said, "Their relationships seem very one-sided, and they're focused on what they can get from other people and how they can take the financial burden off of themselves." However, despite the differing views, Harry and Meghan reportedly have no intention of leaving their home in Montecito, as they have built a settled life there, surrounded by a close-knit circle that includes Oprah Winfrey.
Meanwhile, Truss even met with the late Queen Elizabeth II before her death, and has nothing but praise and respect for her. She said, “In my last meeting with her [Queen Elizabeth II], even though she was very ill, she still wanted to stand up and greet me properly and do her duty.” The former PM was then asked about what Elizabeth might have thought and done about the scandal involving former Prince Andrew. Responding to this, Truss said, “She would always do what her duty was to the country. That was her priority, and I’m sure if she were still around now, that’s exactly what she would do." For context, the former Duke of York faced massive criticism over his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
