Prince Harry, in his bombshell BBC interview, recently made a public plea for reconciliation with his estranged family. Despite his dwindling popularity, royal experts believe he still has a shot at mending ties with his family in the UK. They suggest that to regain both his family's trust and the public’s affection, the Duke must take four key steps to repair his image — each focused toward real, tangible reconciliation rather than just empty words.
In the new Channel 5 documentary Harry: Can He Ever Be Forgiven?, royal experts explored how the Duke can rehabilitate his image. As reported by The Mirror, Journalist Kevin Maguire opined, “As a journalist, it would potentially be a fantastic good news story if Harry came back and reconciled with his brother, reconciled with his father, retook public duties and recovered the popularity he had and then lost. That would be a great tale of redemption, it would be absolutely fantastic.”
Maguire wasn’t the only reporter who strongly believed that the Duke could come back and win the nation’s hearts. Broadcaster Emily Andrews also hoped for Harry’s potential comeback. As for the second step, she said, “It would be good for the UK if he came back and did some really good public service. I think we’d all be reminded [of] what a great bloke he is and how much we do really like him.” The documentary revealed that many Brits felt Harry could be forgiven by his family if he made amends with the press. Despite his acrimonious relationship with the media, politician and journalist Ann Widdecombe opined that he could still have a truce with them.
Widdecombe, chiming in, elaborated on the third step, “I think the only way Harry and the press would have a warm relationship again is…if he finds a direction to his life that commands respect, that could cause the press and Harry to reconcile.” Meanwhile, royal commentator Julie Montagu believed that Harry needed to stick to his guns. She detailed the fourth step, “Stop any time of interview where you’re mentioning any member of your family…if you really want to make that reconciliation, whether that’s private or public, start that. Once that reconciliation begins, then the public can be made aware of that.”
Harry’s relationship with his family reportedly began to fracture after Meghan Markle joined the royal fold. By 2020, after the couple had stepped down as senior royals, the Prince openly detailed the rift in several interviews and his explosive memoir. Despite his recent plea for reconciliation, his disparaging remarks against the royals appear to have done little to heal old wounds. According to Hello! magazine, King Charles allegedly has ‘zero trust’ in his son following his BBC interview, while Prince William is said to have ‘no incentive’ to talk to his brother anytime soon.
