Charles Spencer Has Long Had a 'Faulty Memory,' a Source Claims — Days After Palace Said The Same
Charles Spencer’s Diana memoir is facing fresh scrutiny after Megyn Kelly revealed what a source told her about his changing recollections.
Earl Charles Spencer’s latest memoir on Princess Diana is finally out, and it has made explosive claims regarding King Charles. However, Buckingham Palace has issued a rare statement regarding Spencer’s statements. Moreover, a new source has revealed that Spencer has a “faulty memory” and allegedly changes his story depending on the circumstances.
OK! Magazine reported that during an episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, the podcast host discussed claims that Spencer has given different versions of some of his stories over the years. She said, “This source has informed us that Earl Spencer has been long known to have a faulty memory when it comes to retelling the stories that he loves to tell,” Kelly continued. “Each one retold will have new fabulous details. Something gets enhanced. Something gets left out. But the same story that should ring the same way with the same basic facts over the years.”
According to the source, Spencer’s recollection of events could vary based on who he was speaking to, how much time had passed, and even his mood at the time.
Kelly said the issue becomes more serious when claims could damage someone’s reputation, especially if the details keep changing. “When you're talking about potentially defamatory statements, things that would embarrass someone or make them look bad,” she stated, adding that changing the story so much could mean the person is “no longer being truthful.”
Kelly also mentioned Piers Morgan, who has pushed back against some of Spencer’s statements. In his memoir, Spencer wrote that Morgan was the Daily Mirror editor in 1993 and was responsible for publishing intrusive, hidden-camera photographs of Diana at a gym.
However, Morgan did not take on the role of editor until 1995. Spencer issued an immediate apology after the error came to light, but Morgan is now suing the 9th Earl Spencer.
The host said that though Spencer could now face potential legal trouble over the book, she did not expect the King to sue him, as doing so would only draw more attention to the memoir. She also added that Spencer “cannot stand King Charles” and “hates his guts.”
“And by the way, my source tells me that is the case. That he's hated Charles from the beginning. He can't stand him for a whole host of reasons. So you got to factor that into his reporting about the King,” Kelly revealed.
