Attendee Reveals What Really Went Down at Meghan’s Sydney Retreat — and How Harry Stole the Show
An attendee who was present at the retreat took to Reddit to share a first-hand account of the evening.
Meghan Markle's ‘Her Best Life’ retreat in Sydney had been in the news since it was announced—and not always for the right reasons. The event drew scrutiny before it even began, with critics questioning everything from its exclusivity to its price point. But according to one attendee who took to Reddit shortly after, what actually happened inside told a very different story.
The anonymous poster, who said she was hesitant to share photos for fear they would end up in what she called ‘the hate media,’ described the evening as one of the best nights of her life. And one of the reasons behind it was what no one saw coming. Prince Harry had not been listed in the evening's program. When he walked out onto the stage behind host Gemma O'Neill and Markle, helped his wife up the stairs, and kissed her, the room lost it. The poster recalled blurting out, "Oh my God, Prince Harry!" the moment she saw him.
He spent the rest of the night at a table in the audience, quietly watching Markle speak. "You could just tell how in love they are," the attendee wrote, noting that Harry was "just beaming" at his wife throughout. Markle set the tone early, joking that being away from the kids for the weekend had essentially turned the event into a date night that the audience was crashing. Over the course of the evening, she spoke candidly about their relationship.
She recalled washing off her Wimbledon makeup before their very first date, wanting Harry to see her bare-faced and with her freckles showing. She mentioned the exact dress she wore. When host Gemma walked through a checklist of what makes a great partner, Markle responded with ‘check’ for each quality. From his table at the back, Harry silently mouthed 'ribbit' at her.
On the subject of returning to acting, Markle was candid. She suggested the Royal Family had an indirect influence over her Suits scripts while she was with Harry, because anything her character, Rachel Zane, said would be reported as Markle’s own words, and the writers steadily reduced her to near-silent scenes. "She would say 'Here's this file' for a whole scene," the attendee recalled. Markle said she wouldn't go back to acting under those conditions and that any return would have to feel authentic and fit around life as a mother. She left it at "never say never."
She spoke warmly about her children, describing Archie as deeply tender—"No one told me how much boys love their mothers," she said—and Lili as a little firecracker who has already announced she wants 102 babies, all girls. The evening didn't shy away from harder territory. Markle spoke openly about the relentless media scrutiny and online hate she continues to face—and made clear it hasn't gotten easier with time. When host Gemma became emotional recounting how close she came to canceling the event after experiencing just a fraction of that attention herself, the room went quiet. According to the attendee, Markle reached over and held Gemma's hand. "Meghan said 'I'm so sorry for you' and 'I wouldn't wish that on anyone,'" the poster wrote. "Meghan admitted it is still hard for her."
Markle also addressed something that rarely gets spoken about openly—the former colleagues and long-term staff who have never publicly come to her and Harry's defense. She said she understands why.
