Royalty Meets ‘La Dolce Vita’
Italy has always been a place of utmost importance for the British royal family. Be they famous gondola rides, historic Vatican visits, or even dazzling opera appearances, generations of royal family members have not failed to create unforgettable moments while living the dolce vita in Italy.
Royal Romance
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, in 1961, were spotted taking a romantic gondola ride through Venice during their historic state visit to Italy. They also visited Florence, known as the place where the Renaissance was born. It set the stage for decades of the royals' fascination with Italy’s culture and beauty.
Margaret’s Mediterranean Era
While diplomatic visits would always be on the late Queen’s agenda, her sister Princess Margaret leaned fully into Italian glamour during her trips to Sardinia throughout the 1960s and the 1980s. Photographs capturing the royal swimming, sightseeing, and landing in Porto Cervo in many chic resort looks are in abundance. In 1968, Margaret and her husband, Antony Armstrong-Jones, also visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa and added another glamorous snapshot to royal history.
Diana’s Italian Renaissance
Italy is also known as the spot for Princess Diana’s most iconic fashion moments. During her and then-Prince Charles’ 17-day Italian tour in 1985, Diana stunned at Milan’s La Scala Opera in Queen Mary’s noted Lover’s Knot tiara. She then impressed the fans again in 1995 as she marked her presence at a Venice reception of the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in a bright red mini dress. It is known as one of her boldest style choices when overseas.
Yacht Memories
In 1985, royal fans were delighted after seeing rare family moments featuring young Prince Harry and Prince William. A nostalgic photo featuring the latter waving aboard the royal yacht Britannia while traveling through Venice alongside his family is still remembered today. The candid family photo captured a softer side of the royal members, and it became the monarchy’s most photographed international trip.
Charles’ Italian Love
No modern royal has visited Italy as much as King Charles. He has traveled there as much as 18 times! In 2025, during his address to the Italian Parliament, Charles said that the country was “irresistible” and revealed, "From Turin to Palermo, Verona to Naples, Florence to Trieste, I have learned a little more about this nation and have come to admire it even more.” His long-running fascination with Italy has also included visits alongside Queen Camilla. They have often visited the Vatican, Florence, and Rome over the years.
Making History
Italy is also known for hosting several historic meetings with the Pope. Queen Elizabeth II is known as the first British monarch since the Reformation to officially visit the Holy See in 1961 to meet Pope John XXIII. She also met Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis during her later visits. The most recent royal visit happened in 2025, when King Charles and Queen Camilla met Pope Leo XIV during Jubilee year celebrations, adding to the monarchy’s longstanding ties to the Vatican.
Kate’s Italian Connection
Most recently, Kate Middleton strengthened the royal family’s Italian connection during her 2026 visit. Currently, she is in Reggio Emilia, which is her first international visit since completing chemotherapy. Italy is a place with personal significance for the princess, as she studied at the British Institute in Florence during her gap year before meeting Prince William. During the visit, Middleton was also awarded the Primo Tricolore honor, which added yet another dimension to the royal family’s enduring love affair with Italy.
