Queen Camilla is known for her love of horses, but she has also been the Patron of Medical Detection Dogs since 2014, and promotes the charity that trains dogs to detect diseases like cancer and COVID-19. She regularly organizes events to raise awareness about their work, highlighting their capability to warn people about health emergencies through smell. Her involvement has significantly increased recognition of the charity's bio-detection and medical alert programs, demonstrating the positive impact these dedicated canines have on a patient's life.

Detection Through Scent

The Queen witnessed a demonstration of an electronic nose device developed by Medical Detection Dogs and Dr Andreas Mershin of RealNose.AI. It has been designed to mimic the role of dogs in early-stage prostate cancer screening by detecting disease through scent. She also met Floren, one of the canines who can detect prostate cancer, and who led the development of the cutting-edge screening technology. She also met Jodie, nine, who can pick up the scent of bowel diseases.

Ground-Breaking Progress

Medical Detection Dogs uses trained canines in two main programs to detect smells associated with illness. Medical Alert Support Dogs reduce hospitalizations by alerting people with illnesses like severe allergies and Type 1 diabetes. Bio Detection Dogs analyze samples to detect illnesses such as malaria, Parkinson's disease, and cancer. Notably, Queen Camilla has witnessed the contributions of these canines to the tools for the detection of ailments, including cancer and COVID-19.

A Second Home

The Queen was so impressed with the work and the technology that she requested the canines be brought back to Clarence House in the near future, saying, “I think it’s becoming a second home for the dogs. We’ve had so many people here, and a lot of sceptical people who come and have gone away transformed,” before adding, “We’ll just have to bring more people back here and more dogs."

Dr Mershin stated that dogs excel in different ways, but emphasized the importance of competing with them. The Queen acknowledged nature's superiority with remarks about the necessity of dogs despite advancements in technology, and expressed her interest in future updates. “Nature will always lead the way. However brilliant, as the machine is, we’re always going to need the dogs”, she added.
