George's Future Responsibilities

A lot of responsibility comes with being the future king, and Prince George is already beginning to feel some of that pressure. As the heir to the throne, there are certain rules and expectations he will have to follow that his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, may not have to face in quite the same way. Although all three siblings were raised the same way, George’s future role means he will have far less freedom when it comes to certain aspects of his life.

Travel With William

One of the more unusual rules George may have to follow is related to air travel. After turning 12 in July 2025, a longstanding royal protocol came into play that generally means he and Prince William should travel separately by plane. The reason is simple: both are direct heirs to the throne, so keeping them on different flights helps protect the line of succession in case of an accident. However, Charlotte and Louis can still travel with William. The same protocol applied to William when he turned 12. Graham Laurie, King Charles' former pilot, said on A Right Royal Podcast, "After that, he had to have a separate aircraft, and we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty."

George's position also means he will not have quite the same freedom to choose his future as Charlotte and Louis. While his younger siblings could eventually decide to pursue careers outside the royal family or live more privately, the future King is being raised with the expectation that he will one day become king. Royal historian Marlene Koenig told Us Weekly that George is ‘undoubtedly aware’ of his future. She said, “The Coronation provided the young prince with the knowledge that he, too, would one day be crowned in a Coronation ceremony… he is most certainly aware of his future.” Royal experts have also pointed out that Charlotte and Louis could have more flexibility over whether they become working royals as adults. A former aide said that the possibility of them building careers beyond the monarchy “has not been ruled out,” Entertainment Daily reported.

Renounce the Church

Religion is another area where George's future comes with a clear expectation. He was christened into the Church of England as a baby and is being raised in the Anglican faith. As king, he will become its Supreme Governor and must remain in communion with the Church of England. This means George could not convert to another religion and still inherit the throne. But the rules were changed in 2013 so that royals can marry Catholics without losing their place in the succession, provided the future monarch remains part of the Church of England. Charlotte and Louis are not expected to take on that same role within the Church of England.

Say 'No' to the Job

George may still be a child, but his parents have already started preparing him for the job that awaits him. William has reportedly begun explaining what his future role would involve, while trying not to put too much pressure on him. That preparation has gradually become more visible, with George taking part in major royal occasions, including Charles' coronation in 2023, where he served as a page. He has also attended other important events alongside his parents, such as VE Day. His siblings can take part in royal events too, but neither is being prepared for the Crown in quite the same way.

Voice His Political Opinions

As George gets older, he will also have to be more careful about how he conducts himself in public. The monarch is expected to remain politically neutral, and he will eventually have to keep his personal political views to himself. As the future king, he will face more scrutiny as he takes on more royal duties, including how he interacts with people and any future partner. While there is no rule stopping him from showing affection in public, he will also be expected to maintain a certain level of decorum. Charlotte and Louis are unlikely to face the same level of attention.
