The Future King Steps Up

Prince William, as the heir to the throne, has held an important place in the Royal Family since a young age. But in recent months, his position has taken on greater significance as he steps into more responsibilities and has been given a bigger role in some of the monarchy’s most important affairs, as King Charles continues to undergo treatment.

A Bigger Role for William

William’s growing responsibilities became evident in 2026 when King Charles appointed him as a Grantor of Royal Warrants, alongside Princess Kate. William can now grant warrants to eligible companies that have an ongoing relationship with his household, following recommendations from the Royal Household Warrants Committee. The warrants allow these companies to use the Royal Arms in connection with their business, strengthening their brand.

William Takes Charles' Place

William represented Charles at the state funeral of King Harald V of Norway on September 9. The Prince of Wales travelled to Oslo in his official capacity as heir to the throne and joined other members of European royal families for the ceremony. He also walked in the funeral procession behind Harald’s coffin, taking on a highly visible role on behalf of his father and the British Crown.

William has also taken a leading role in a new suicide prevention initiative in the sporting world, launching On Your Side. It is a toolkit developed by the Royal Foundation with the British Standards Institution and mental health charity Chasing the Stigma to help sports organizations spot warning signs, start conversations, and support people in crisis. He was joined by England's captain Harry Kane, and the initiative was backed by the Football Association, Premier League, and British Cycling. According The Sun, William said in the speech, "My hope is that every sporting organization in the country will look at what is being launched today and ask a question: ‘What more than we do?’"

Decisive William

When Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor announced in October 2025 that he would stop using his royal title and honors, he made clear the decision involved more than Charles. In his statement, he said, “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.” William was reportedly among those consulted, with The Sunday Times reporting that he was preparing to take a “more ruthless” approach to his uncle, including keeping him away from his future coronation and other royal events. Royal biographer Andrew Lownie told ABC that the King may have been “under pressure, perhaps from his son William, that this boil needs to be lanced.” This suggests that William now has more of a say when it comes to making difficult decisions for the Crown.

A Modern Approach

William has also been stepping outside the traditional royal media circuit, appearing on platforms such as Heart Breakfast and the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce. His Heart appearance was relaxed, covering everything from family life to football and his work in the Isles of Scilly. Similarly, on New Heights, he chatted about football, the World Cup, and even joked about his father’s dislike of the sport. By choosing to speak to audiences through these more informal platforms, William is seemingly showing the world what kind of a king he would be and changing how the royal family interacts with the public.
