Prince William delivered an emotional and deeply personal tribute to Sir David Attenborough during a recent gala event at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Noted names had gathered to celebrate the legend's 100th birthday. Reflecting on the impact Attenborough has had on him and his children’s lives, William called the friendship ‘profound’ and praised the renowned broadcaster for raising generations through his storytelling and strong advocacy for the environment.

In his speech, William further described Attenborough’s voice as the 'constant' in everyone’s lives. He said, “You have been a guiding light in the work we now undertake to safeguard the natural world. Long before many of us found our voice on the challenges we face, you were speaking with clarity, urgency, and optimism.” He continued, “And it is that sense of urgent optimism that has made all the difference.” The royal also lauded Attenborough for bringing about a change in the global understanding of environmental issues. He told guests about being “transformed the way we see the only home that we have — Planet Earth.”

William then got candid about the impact Attenborough had had on his three kids, Prince George, Prince Charlotte, and Prince Louis. They famously met the conservationist in 2020. “Like millions across the world, my children have grown up with your incredible storytelling – a window into the wonders of nature that shaped their understanding of our planet, and their belief that it is something worth fighting for.” He added, “And for me personally, your friendship has been profound. You have strengthened my own determination to act.”

The bond extends beyond admiration for William. Attenborough was the first member of William’s Earthshot Prize Council. He also helped launch the environmental initiative worth £50 million (approx. $ 68.1 million) in 2020. Referencing the noteworthy work of the Earthshot Prize during his speech, William explained that those involved are striving to transform inspiration into action. He went on to say, “One of the greatest gifts you have given us, David, is more than just an understanding of what is at risk. You have given us the belief that positive change is still possible.”

William wrapped his speech with yet another emotional reflection on Attenborough’s legacy and the responsibility that’s on the future generation to carry. He said, “Your legacy is not only the films we treasure or the knowledge you have shared. It is the generations you have inspired. Generations who now look forward with determination and with optimism.”
