Was Meghan Markle’s Reported Netflix Comeback Genuine or Just Another PR Stunt?

While there was a lot of chatter about Meghan Markle's big acting comeback, something unexpected seems to be disrupting the momentum.

While there was a lot of chatter about Meghan Markle's big acting comeback, something unexpected seems to be disrupting the momentum. Over the past few days, nonstop headlines about Markle and Prince Harry's UK return have dominated the news cycle, closely followed by reports of her joining Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen. However, in true royal fashion, things aren’t going quite according to plan, and this time, another big-shot celebrity seems to be stealing the Duchess's spotlight.

Reports emerged that Markle was in talks to join the third season of Netflix’s hit series The Gentlemen. The timing immediately raised eyebrows, as the show is filmed in the UK and its second season is set to premiere on September 3. However, the deal was reportedly pulled at the last minute owing to public outcry. Former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown claimed on Saturday that Markle’s potential casting had been withdrawn.

“I learned this morning that the casting of Meghan Markle in season 3 of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen has been withdrawn,” Brown wrote in her Substack. While many thought it to be the end of her Netflix project, the story appears to be far from over. A source reportedly told The Sun, “Her return to acting is expected to draw a large audience of both her supporters and critics and is likely to make a lot of money. It will be seen as a major coup for whoever signs her.” So, where did the confusion come from?

One possible explanation is that there was never a deal to begin with. Reports have repeatedly stressed that Markle’s involvement was only in early discussions and no official casting announcement had been made. A source speaking to Naughty But Nice also shared, “Guy didn’t need to cast Meghan—he needed people talking about The Gentlemen, and overnight, everybody was.”

Elaborating more on the chaos, another source added, “People are framing this as Guy backed away from Meghan. That assumes there was ever something concrete to back away from. There wasn’t.” The same insider compared the situation to the way celebrities can use speculation to keep themselves in the spotlight, saying, “Madonna understood how to turn speculation into oxygen. Guy clearly learned something.”

For now, though, Markle’s acting comeback appears to remain a possibility rather than a done deal. Other than The Gentleman, Markle also has other projects in the pipeline, including her small cameo as herself in Close Personal Friends, filmed in California last November.
