Trump Has a Brutal Opinion About Meghan Markle's Impact on Prince Harry's Life
Robert Hardman shares Donald Trump’s personal insights on the monarchy and his frosty verdict on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The one thing on everyone's mind during King Charles and Queen Camilla’s US state visit was the possibility of a reunion between the monarch and his son, Prince Harry. The young prince, who was not on the guest list, also ran into trouble with the American President and got a hard-hitting reply. Donald Trump, in particular, has been known for his deep admiration for the British Royal Family. From addressing King Charles as a ‘great man’ to calling Princess Catherine ‘beautiful’ and ‘radiant’ during his second state visit to the UK in 2025, his comments have consistently reflected that sentiment. While his affinity for the Crown remains steadfast, his verdict on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can be categorized as nothing short of brutal, according to royal author Robert Hardman.
Writing for the Daily Mail, a veteran royal author recounted a telling moment from his meeting with the American President at the White House. As he presented Trump with a copy of his new Queen Elizabeth II biography, which he later posted on social media, he immediately began flipping through the pages, hunting for his own name among the records of the late Queen. “Let's see if he's said reasonably nice things,” Trump allegedly joked, prompting what Hardman later described as a suddenly ‘deafening’ silence in the room. The mood shifted when Trump learned that he had been the late Queen’s final state visitor before her passing in 2022. “'I was the last? I hope I didn't do anything to offend her!” he quipped. In response, Hardman shared a rare insight, reminding him that the late Queen had privately described him as “charming, tall, tanned, big, courteous, mid-century” and even “amusing.”
This anecdote set the stage for the rest of the interview, where the President’s admiration for King Charles and Prince William became increasingly evident. The monarch’s recent US tour appeared ot have left a lasting impression on the President, as he didn’t hold back his praise, stating, “He's a great guy, he really is,” while speaking about Charles. The President was equally complimentary about Prince William, whom he appeared to view as a future stabilizing figure for the monarchy. “William, he'll be a good King, won't he?” Trump asked before answering his own question, “He's very nice. A great guy. I like him.”
The tone, however, became notably different once the conversation shifted to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Trump allegedly wondered aloud whether Harry could ever return to royal life, asking, “So can Harry make a comeback?” Once Hardman hinted that a reunion seemed improbable, Trump reportedly delivered the most striking line of the entire exchange. “Too many things, I guess. That wife of his. Boy, what she's done to that guy,” Trump reportedly said of the Duchess. He then seemed to liken Markle’s standing in the royal fold to that of Catherine, remarking, “I guess she got blocked out by William's wife.”
In his write-up, Hardman painted the encounter as a striking glimpse into Trump’s personal feelings toward the monarchy, one where admiration for Charles, William, and Catherine stood in sharp contrast to his blunt assessment of Harry and Markle.
