While the color blue has long been a staple of the royal palette, the shade is now reportedly a source of friction between Queen Camilla and Princess Kate, as they manage the unspoken rules of Palace life. At the heart of the dispute is a strict, albeit informal protocol regarding which royal receives priority when selecting their attire. Given her rank as Queen Consort, Camilla allegedly claims first dibs on her preferred choice of colors, yet she and the Princess of Wales have constantly found themselves going for the same hue, and the reason behind it is quite telling.

A source close to the Palace told Express that Camilla is “now able to choose her outfits before all the other women in the royal family.” Calling it a part of the “royal pecking order,” the insider highlighted that the rule extends to style and shade. Notably, since “her Majesty's favorite color is blue, and so is Kate's,” they often set their eyes on the same color. This control over the royal wardrobe has become a quiet point of contention behind the scenes. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Amanda Matta notes that for Camilla, the color is more than a fashion statement; it is a tool for legitimacy. “Protecting Camilla’s use of blue would have enforced a visual hierarchy for royal events,” the royal commentator said.

Highlighting that the Queen began her royal life amid constant 'public skepticism,' Matta argued that her consistent use of a 'commanding royal blue' has been central to that image building. “Her preferred shade is literally ‘royal blue,’” she noted. The tension allegedly peaked following reports that royal dressers were growing 'apprehensive' about letting other members of the family appear in that specific blue shade at once. Having tracked the ‘battle over blue’ on social media, Matta believes this strict control was a deliberate move. She asserted that the public shouldn’t forget “Camilla claiming blue and telling other royals, namely Kate, they could not wear it,” adding that the Queen’s dresser, Jacqui Meakin, has earned a reputation for ‘ruffling feathers' in her role as a color gatekeeper.

While the rules have reportedly been relaxed in recent years to allow different shades of blue to be worn at the same event, the underlying message remains one of ‘authority.’ The shift in how Kate utilizes the color serves as a clear indicator of her growing influence in the monarchy. Since assuming the title of Princess of Wales, she has moved away from her preference for softer pastels, increasingly opting for bolder and more saturated tones. According to Matta, this serves as 'ideal visual shorthand' for an institution that is positioning the Waleses as its stable and reliable future.

But not all observers, however, interpret the color coordination as a sign of conflict.

According to British broadcaster, Helena Chard — rather than friction — these occasional color clashes might actually be a deliberate display of unity. “The rules have relaxed around the regal color blue, allowing royal women to wear different shades of blue. This allows the message of calm stability to shine through,” she remarked.
