Queen Camilla Just Turned 79 — and Insiders Say She's Living Life in Reverse
Queen Camilla marked her 79th birthday, and while many people her age are enjoying retirement, she is taking on more royal duties than ever before.
Queen Camilla is celebrating her 79th birthday, and while many might expect her to finally slow down, she seems to be doing the exact opposite. While most people her age are enjoying retirement, the Queen is taking on more royal duties than ever before. According to one of her closest friends, this unexpected chapter of her life has seen her "living life in reverse" as she embraces an increasingly demanding role at the heart of the monarchy.
In a conversation with HELLO!, author Gyles Brandreth noted, “Just as everybody else is beginning to wind down, they [the King and Queen] are having to wind up. You might think she could slow down a bit, but they are having to quicken the pace. I never get the impression that she is doing it reluctantly.” Reflecting on this, author Catherine Mayer further elaborated on the idea that Camilla is living her life in reverse; while she was once content without a professional career, she is now balancing a schedule packed with commitments.
“This is a woman who really was very happy not having a career, and who liked to potter and do things that interested her, and now suddenly she has this huge role. She's lived a lot of her life in different directions to most of us,” explained Mayer. Friends of the Queen also discussed her vital role in supporting the King behind the scenes, with Mayer describing Camilla as the person who brings necessary balance to Charles’s life.
"She is the person who can lift him from a dark mood into the bright sunshine," the author shared, adding, "A long time ago, Charles decided that Camilla was non-negotiable in his life—not just because he's happier with her, but because she is so essential to him that he really only functions at full capacity when she is by his side." Agreeing with Mayer, Brandreth noted, "I think she brings him contentment. He is at ease with himself, which enables him to do what he does with conviction and without anxiety. They are a superb partnership."
Beyond her official royal duties, the experts highlighted Camilla's deep commitment to causes such as literacy and supporting survivors of domestic abuse. They added that those close to her describe her as warm, funny, and profoundly devoted to her family. Speaking about her birthday plans, Brandreth noted that for Camilla, the celebrations are rarely about grand gestures; instead, she prefers spending time with her children, Tom Parker Bowles and Laura Lopes, and her grandchildren. "I don’t think she sees birthdays as a big deal, but family is very important to her, so that is her kind of celebration," he explained.
As she enters her 80th year, those who know her best say she has no plans to slow down, choosing instead to keep moving forward with the same quiet determination that has defined her journey all these years.
