Ex-Royal Aide Reveals Camilla's 'Sacrifices' in Her Marriage to Charles: 'Never Part of the Goal'

Queen Camilla's former aide revealed that her private life took a backseat after her marriage to King Charles, something she gracefully accepted.

Although their journey to the altar was far from smooth, King Charles and Queen Camilla married in April 2005 and have remained committed ever since. Their romance, which began in the early 1970s, has endured decades of scrutiny, with the pair always supporting one another through all the ups and downs. Reflecting on their enduring love, the Queen's former aide lifted the lid on her many sacrifices, often at the cost of her health and personal life, for the man she dearly loves.

In an interview with Newsweek, Camilla's ex-aide dismissed the ludicrous claims that she married Charles solely for wealth and power. Instead, they asserted, "It wasn't the role or title—whether as Duchess [of Cornwall] or Queen—that appealed to her [Camilla]; it was being with the man she loved." Highlighting how she had to forgo having a personal life after their high-profile marriage, they added, "That meant accepting the duties that would come with him [Charles], even at a time of life when most of her [Camilla's] contemporaries were deadheading roses in the garden or having lovely cruises in the Med."

One of the biggest sacrifices that Camilla made was to dedicate her life to royal duties, often at the cost of her health. They continued, "She [Camilla] was very willing to undertake the role and responsibilities, but it was never part of the goal of what she wanted from life. And of course, it's come with a lot of hard toil and quite a lot of sacrifice as well, because everything she does is now in the public eye." Indeed, the Queen began 2025 with chronic fatigue, having been diagnosed with pneumonia, which left her too tired to pursue her love for reading. However, that didn't deter her, as a palace source explained, "She's [Camilla's] a stranger to self-pity. It's something she's inherited, really, I think, from her late father and his wartime experiences."

Having said that, Camilla and Charles recently celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary on April 9, with the relationship going stronger than ever. Commenting on the milestone, body language expert Darren Stanton branded them 'the most compatible royal couple.' As reported by the Royal Insider, he stressed, "We're talking about a 50-year-plus romance. They've [Charles and Camilla] been in love a long time. It's been an intense relationship where they've had to overcome a lot."
