Queen Elizabeth II had once famously joked that she wanted to be a horse. According to El País, during her childhood, when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she had quipped, "I would like to be a horse." It is widely acknowledged that the late Queen had a deep passion for equestrian activities and passed this legacy on to future generations.

Hence, it was expected that the royal brides who were accepted into the fold would share this quality; however, none of Princess DianaKate Middletonor Meghan Markle excelled at this hobby, whereas Camilla displayed the same energy as the royals did in her youth. King Charles and Queen Camilla were fatefully introduced by a friend while attending a polo match at Windsor Great Park in 1970, and the rest, as they say, is history. A royal expert emphasized that this distinctive pastime served as a seal of approval for the 79-year-old Queen as she was integrated into the royal family.

Vigar, former royal correspondent and author of the upcoming book The Four Wives of Windsor: The Inside Story of the Power Behind the Crown, asserted this during an interview with GBN News. "Camilla is keener on horses, which is an advantage when hanging out with the Windsors," he has revealed in his book. Vigar further stated that the other three famous royal brides displayed a lack of this obsession. "[Meghan and Catherine] have married into the wrong family," he continued.

"I forgot to put this anecdote in, but early on somebody at a polo match found Catherine all on her own in a marquee somewhere, or hiding around the back, and she said that she wasn't that into horses," he added. This occurred during the early years of Prince William and Kate's courtship, while they were attending the University of St Andrews. It has been noted that although the Princess of Wales attends major equestrian events in a working capacity, she does not actively ride. She was recently captured cheering Prince William at the DMMI Royal Charity Polo Cup 2026; the royal couple was caught in rare PDA moments after William won the match.

"I don't think Diana was into horses that much, and I'm pretty sure Meghan isn't," Vigar further highlighted. "So yeah, Camilla's the only one who got that right!" The royal correspondent continued to state that Prince Philip humorously expressed his view on the royal family's passion for horses, noting Princess Anne's strong interest in equestrianism with the quip: “If it doesn't fart or eat hay, she isn't interested.” Meanwhile, Queen Camilla, who holds the position of President of the Ebony Horse Club and Patron of the British Equestrian Federation, is frequently seen attending charitable and equestrian events to promote the activity.

According to the BBC, in 2024 Queen Camilla became a patron of the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket, Suffolk, following in the legacy of her late mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II. "HM The Queen, being a talented horsewoman, has shown great enthusiasm for equestrian sports over many years," Frances Stanley, Chairman of the museum's board of trustees, had lauded the Queen's efforts back then.
