The new year is turning out to be the biggest turning point in Sarah Ferguson’s life yet. Her long-standing stay at Royal Lodge, where she has lived alongside her former husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, since 2008, is drawing to a close. She will also continue life without royal titles, marking a definitive shift away from the privileges that has defined her public identity so far. What remains uncertain is how she will now piece together the next phase of her life.

But just as that transition hangs like a sword above her head, Ferguson made a recent public remark about the late Queen that has placed her in an uncomfortable position. It has reopened scrutiny at a time when her professional and personal world has already been thinning out. Over the past year, several charitable organizations have distanced themselves from the former duchess following renewed attention on her past links to Jeffrey Epstein. With that withdrawal came a sharp decline in public engagements and commercial opportunities. Even the small comforts of royal proximity are now under question, including the future of Queen Elizabeth II’s corgis, Sandy and Muick.

Since the Queen’s passing, the dogs have lived at Royal Lodge with Ferguson and Andrew. Buckingham Palace had previously maintained that the corgis would 'remain with the family,' per The Independent, but Ferguson’s visible attachment to them complicates what might otherwise be a straightforward arrangement. That bond was publicly mentioned during her recent appearance at the Creative Women Platform Forum in London, where she spoke at length about her canine adoptions and made a comment that quickly travelled far and wide.

“I have her dogs. I have her corgis. Every morning, they come in and go ‘woof woof’ and all that, and I'm sure it's her talking to me. I'm sure it's her, reminding me she's still around,” she said, drawing laughter from the audience. She continued, “Anyway, the real thing is that I had the greatest honour to be her daughter-in-law. That's pretty huge. And when I was driving here, I saw the Elizabeth Line [on the Tube], and I said, ‘I want everyone to remember what an amazing lady she was.’”

The statement, intended as affectionate, has coincided poorly with the shifting ground beneath her, following Mountbatten-Windsor’s eviction from Royal Lodge. As fresh claims now suggest that the arrangement may not be as settled as it seemed. According to Rob Shuter’s #ShuterScoop, King Charles is said to be “preparing to seize” the dogs from his brother, believing the former prince is no longer “capable” of caring for them. Palace insiders add that the King is “deeply unsettled” by the current living setup and feels the corgis now require a “more stable home—and better judgment around them.”

Meanwhile, a senior courtier also suggested that the late Queen would never have approved of Sarah Ferguson being left in sole charge of her beloved dogs. “Her Majesty was fond of Fergie, but she was fiercely protective of those corgis,” the source said. “She would never have wanted them exclusively in Sarah’s care—and Charles understands that better than anyone.”
