Resurfaced Video Shows Meghan Markle Calling $100 Candles 'Obnoxious' — Oh, The Irony
Meghan Markle's resurfaced video has fans scanning the As Ever website.
When Meghan Markle started her lifestyle brand, As Ever, it felt like a natural extension of her lifestyle blog. The Tig showed her love for food, beverages, and elevated everyday practices through a gourmet range of jams, teas, wines, and her recently launched signature scented candles. However, after an old video of Markle criticizing expensive candles surfaced online, social media users found a discrepancy between her approach then and now.
In the video, Markle can be seen speaking at a public event, as she says, “There are no hundred-dollar candles on my site (The Tig). That’s so obnoxious.” The comments may hit a sore spot now since her brand’s signature scented candles can be deemed obnoxiously priced, too. While each individual candle currently costs $64 USD on her website, the special hampers and bundles exceed beyond $100.
Markle’s most recent launch, the ‘Mother’s Day Edit’, which includes two scented candles and a box of chocolates, is priced at $186 USD. The signature candles have made an appearance in quite a few special hampers, including ‘When The Day Slows Set’, which has the two candles paired with hibiscus tea and lemon and ginger tea. The set costs $132 USD. ‘The Signature Scent Collection,’ which includes all four candles, is priced at $256 USD, only a few bucks short of her special ‘The Complete As Ever Pantry’ hamper that features almost her entire collection. The latter is priced at $295 USD.

Markle has more often than not been compared to Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow, as both of them founded lifestyle brands, with the latter decisively being the more experienced one. Paltrow’s brand ‘Goop’, which shot to internet virality thanks to a cheekily-named candle, still has candles for sale on the website, with their prices ranging between $40 USD and $80 USD. Her set of three candles costs $55 USD, which is considerably lower than a single one of Markle’s signature scented candles.
This is not the first time that Markle has been criticised for charging exorbitant prices. She recently faced flak for charging around $3,199 VIP tickets to a ‘girl’s weekend’ during her Australia trip last month. The two-day gathering was organized by the ‘Her Best Life’ podcast, with the Duchess as a special guest. The ticket prices had drawn such a level of interest that it had been the most-anticipated event of her four-day visit Down Under. However, the event ended up being rather anticlimactic.
Markle’s appearance at the event turned out to be more of a cameo, as she stayed at the venue for just two hours before leaving with Prince Harry to attend a rugby game.
