Queen Camilla’s 'True Colors' Revealed After One 'Embarrassing Mishap' at a Royal Event
BBC DJ Sara Cox reveals a comical 'embarrassing mishap' with Queen Camilla during a surprisingly candid royal meet-and-greet.
The royals are known for their calm, often calculated public appearances. But once in a while, a situation pushes them out of their comfort zone, and they handle social blunders with a sense of grace — and a surprising amount of humor. This was exactly the case with BBC Radio DJ Sara Cox, who, during a royal event, crossed paths with Queen Consort Camilla at Clarence House. During the meet and greet, the moment turned quite comical, which Cox now describes as an ‘embarrassing mishap.’
At the gathering, Cox noticed a woman she mistook for a well-known author. Intent on being a helpful guest, she took it upon herself to introduce the woman to the hostess. What she didn’t know was that she was about to introduce Camilla to her own daughter. Speaking to the Observer, Cox stated, “I mistook her daughter, Laura [Lopes], for an author that I half knew, and so I said to Laura, 'Come over. I'll introduce you to [Camilla]. Let's go over and say hi.” But rather than pointing out the error, Laura showed how down-to-earth she really is and ‘played along’ with the mix-up.
The moment of realization for Cox didn’t come from a stern correction or a royal aide, but from the Queen Consort’s own warm reaction. “[S]o we went over, and it slowly dawned on me who she was, because Camilla was like 'Hiiii' to her own daughter,” she recalled. As per Cox, the interaction truly captured who Camilla really is. It showed that beneath the crown is someone easy to talk to and, above all, great fun to be around. While the BBC DJ fondly recalled her interaction with the Queen Consort, it wasn’t the only time Camilla’s sharp sense of humor has been on full display.
While visiting Jane Austen’s House museum in 2022, the Queen Consort was shown the iconic white linen shirt worn by Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy from the 1995 Pride and Prejudice lake scene. After realizing that she was standing before the actual garment, Camilla couldn’t resist a cheeky remark: “But he's not in it, that's a bit sad.” When museum director Lizzie Dunford joked that the shirt was unfortunately no longer damp, Camilla offered a quick yet mischievous solution. “You could give it a good spray,” said the Queen Consort, leaving the room in splits. The video was later shared by the official YouTube channel of the Royal Family, highlighting yet again that Camilla remains the funniest of the royal bunch.
Even being a King can never save one from being poked fun at by his wife. During a 2024 visit to Samoa, Camilla didn’t hesitate to crack a joke at her husband’s expense. Talking about an old tale about a group of men and women who were all working to cover the roof of a chief’s house with dried grass, the Queen Consort quipped, “Although they started at the same time, the women finished their side first, as they had labored through the night, while the men slept.”
