Queen Camilla Reveals King Charles’s Brave Response to His Cancer Diagnosis
Known for his workaholic nature, King Charles continues to defy suggestions to slow down despite his diagnosis.
King Charles' cancer diagnosis came as a shock not only to the royal family but also to royal fans worldwide. Buckhimgham Palace confirmed the news on 5th February 2024; since then, the monarch has been under strict medical supervision. However, this hasn't stopped him from undertaking strenuous responsibilities, a testament to his unwavering will to recover.
In December 2025, he shared a positive health update that revealed his treatment frequency has been "significantly reduced," though he is not officially described as being in remission or cured. Now, for the first time, Queen Camilla has opened up about the difficult period that rocked the monarchy during a conversation marking the 30th anniversary of Maggie’s cancer charity, where she revealed the four inspirational words King Charles uttered after learning of his diagnosis.
Camilla disclosed that Charles was determined to continue working even after coming to terms with his illness, sharing that "I'm going to cope" was his wise and brave response, even as those around him worried for his health. "Look at my husband, nothing stopped him. He just said, 'This is my way, I’m going to cope with it,'" the Queen added while lauding her husband for his courage and conviction. The announcement was a major blow, coming right after the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, had revealed her own cancer battle. Prince William had reportedly labeled it the "hardest year" of their lives, according to HELLO!
The monarch resumed public engagements in April 2024, shortly after treatment began, and has maintained his duties, including a successful state visit to the US in May 2026. Known for his workaholic nature, he continues to defy suggestions to slow down despite his diagnosis. Queen Camilla had described his dedication as "won’t slow down and won’t do what he’s told."
Dame Laura praised Camilla for her powerful expression of emotions and her authentic response as a wife, while also commending the King for his openness. "To hear her speak so powerfully of her own emotions when visiting our Royal Free centre, while knowing about His Majesty’s diagnosis, is a huge honour. The King’s openness about his diagnosis has undoubtedly helped others to be more open themselves, and to now hear the Queen’s completely understandable and natural response as a wife shines a light on why it is so important that family and friends also get the support they need," she said, as reported by HELLO! Meanwhile, the monarch has retreated to Balmoral for a much-needed summer sojourn after performing royal duties round the clock.
Royal commentator Emily Andrews revealed in her Women & Home column that the King has been in excellent health this year, with engagements nearly at pre-cancer levels after his treatment began in February 2024. Although he continues immunotherapy, doctors are optimistic about his recovery. He will take a holiday in the Highlands for fishing and painting while also fulfilling state duties, including hosting the UK's new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, and his wife at Balmoral.
