How Queen Camilla Nearly Let Slip King Charles's Cancer Diagnosis Prior to Palace Announcement
For Camilla, King Charles's cancer diagnosis brought home a reality she had previously known only through her work with cancer charities.
While the Royal Family is known for its secrecy, Queen Camilla, in an unexpected turn of events, opened up for the first time about one of the most difficult chapters she has faced as a wife and working royal. In a recent interview, the Queen reflected on the immense toll that learning of King Charles's cancer diagnosis took on her. She praised the King for his courage in handling the ordeal while also revealing how she nearly slipped and shared the news before it was officially made public.
Back in 2024, Camilla attended a public engagement at a Maggie’s cancer support facility just days before Buckingham Palace officially announced King Charles’ cancer diagnosis. Looking back, she admitted, "I remember coming to see a Maggie’s just after the King was diagnosed. Nobody could say anything at the time. That was quite difficult. I almost said something, but, you know, I felt that it wasn’t the time to say."
The Queen had been carrying the knowledge of her husband’s diagnosis while meeting cancer patients and their families. She said the experience suddenly felt much more personal than it had before. She explained, "I looked at everybody who was suffering and all the relations, and I think it made me realise even more how important these places were." Camilla also admitted that she found it difficult to keep her emotions inside.
When Dame Laura Lee, Maggie’s chief executive, pointed out that the visit came just a week before Charles’ diagnosis became public and praised the courage it must have taken, Camilla gave a very honest response. "Well, it wasn’t… I was just longing to let it out, but obviously I couldn’t," she explained. She admitted that carrying such a heavy secret made her visit to the center that day particularly nerve-wracking.
She found herself speaking to visitors differently that day, almost as though she was trying to understand their experiences while silently carrying her own family's news. Sharing insight into those interactions, she added, "I was almost questioning them. I didn’t want to pry too deeply." The Queen continued, "But normally when I went in, I was just talking to them, but I don’t know, I felt it was much more deep." However, Camilla also shared that amid the storm, her husband endured it all bravely without a complaint. "Look at my husband. Nothing stopped him. He just said, ‘This is my way. I’m going to cope with it’," she shared.
For Camilla, however, the diagnosis brought home something she had previously understood mainly through her work with cancer charities. "It had never really come back to roost at home, and suddenly your husband is diagnosed, and you think‘, Goodness, I’ve been talking to all these people, and now I’m the one with some relation who’s got to help to look after my poor husband and try and understand it all," she explained.
