King Charles Proves a Monarch's Work Is 'Never Quite Finished' After a Hectic Few Months

A royal expert says the work of a monarch is never over as King Charles prepares to wrap up another busy schedule.

King Charles' latest public appearances have been refreshingly delightful. From overseas tours to major public engagements, the monarch has remained a steady presence despite his demanding calendar. He earned praise for his diplomatic approach during the U.S. tour, spent time chatting with guests at the annual Buckingham Palace Garden Parties, and showcased his creative side while visiting Northern Ireland with Queen Camilla in May. He also joined fellow senior royals for Trooping the Colour before enjoying a heartwarming grandfather moment with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet earlier this month. In all, it has been a whirlwind few months for the King, but as one royal expert noted, a monarch's work is "never quite finished."

According to the Royal Diary, King Charles, accompanied by Queen Camilla, will open the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games at the Hydro, Scottish Event Campus, Exhibition Way, Glasgow on Thursday the 23rd. In his role as the Patron, the King is expected to declare the opening of the Games with a special inspirational message. Meanwhile, expert Emily Nash had pointed out earlier, as per HELLO!, that the monarch had another important job scheduled, appointing the new Prime Minister. Charles completed that responsibility yesterday when he invited the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, to the traditional "kissing of hands" ceremony after accepting the resignation of the outgoing Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. This centuries-old significant moment is an official nod from the monarch, allowing the formation of a new government despite maintaining a neutral stance on politics in public. 

Nash further highlighted that "the work of being monarch is never quite finished"; hence, the King deserves downtime to rejuvenate alongside his cancer treatment. She noted that the monarch has been courageously "navigating political upheaval, international crises, and family challenges, all while maintaining a remarkably full program of public engagements," also adding, "As always, when duty calls, he will rise to the occasion."

Once the Commonwealth Games are underway, the King is expected to begin his annual summer break in Scotland. In recent years, Charles has adjusted the tradition by first spending time at the Castle of Mey in Caithness before traveling to Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire for an extended stay. During the royal family's residence, the Balmoral estate and its grounds are closed to the public.
