Queen Camilla Breaks Royal Protocol in Unexpected Way—And It's A 500 Year Tradition
The Queen is the first in 500 years of the Crown to have gotten this honor.
In a historic shift, a new commemorative coin by The Royal Mint features both Queen Camilla's and King Charles III's royal ciphers, breaking centuries of tradition that reserved coinage for the reigning monarch. This release marks 500 years of the Crown and is the first to directly recognize a Queen Consort since the Tudor era. Inspired by coins from King Henry VIII's reign, it symbolizes a significant constitutional milestone and acknowledges Queen Camilla's role, attracting attention from royal observers and coin collectors, Geo News reported. According to YouTuber Christopher Collects, an employee of Britannia Coin Company in Royal Wootton Bassett, collectors place greater importance on objects that signify a special connection than on their face value. "This release combines Royal history, Tudor inspiration, and a genuinely rare constitutional moment," the expert expressed.
A coin featuring Queen Camilla's cipher is a potent representation of her integration into the British monarchy's history, giving admirers a tangible way to 'own' a piece of this contemporary era. As a tradition in the UK, coins usually depict only the current monarch, not their spouse. Although she is referred to as Queen Camilla in public, her formal title is that of Queen Consort. Wiltshire Times reported that, inspired by the Crown coins from King Henry VIII's reign that featured the initials of his first three wives, the new coin will feature a Tudor rose on one side and the crowned royal ciphers of King Charles and Queen Camilla on the other. "It's a real tip of the hat to serious coin collectors who know their British history, but it's also sure to appeal to royal watchers, too," the coin expert continued.
This rare move marks the first instance in centuries that a Queen Consort appears on UK currency, while the King is featured on all new coins. The inaugural Crown coins were introduced under King Henry VIII's reign as part of a coinage reform led by Cardinal Wolsey. During the reign of King Edward VI, Silver Crowns were created in 1551 and quickly gained popularity as coinage. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles ascended to the throne on September 8, 2022, making Camilla Queen Consort. She was crowned at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.
Camilla has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Dame Grand Cross of the Order of Pope Pius IX (2025), Grand Master of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (2024), and Extra Lady of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle (2023). She is also Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter (2022), a member of the King’s Privy Council (UK, 2016; Canada, 2025), and holds military recognition as Vice-Admiral of the UK (2025).
