Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are known to be fiercely protective of their children's privacy. While Harry has remained true to his principles, Markle has occasionally shared photos of their kids on Instagram. Neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez analyzed their behavior and suggested that Harry disapproves of Markle posting pictures of their kids online.
After returning to Instagram earlier this year in January, Markle has shared rare moments with her children, often capturing them from behind. Analyzing the same, Dr. Hafeez told Nicki Swift that Harry may be more sensitive to their children's visibility, simply because while Markle has spent several years in the spotlight, he's the only one to have done so as a child. She explained, “When someone spends their childhood in the public eye, they often feel like they never truly had control over their image. As adults, this can make them very protective when it comes to their children, wanting to shield them from similar experiences.”
The outlet also reports that one of the clearest signs the Duke of Sussex prefers his kids not to be photographed is that whenever they are, it's from angles that conceal their faces. It also indicates how he and the Duchess may have found a middle ground when it comes to their children’s online presence. Dr. Hafeez believes that when one parent is more concerned about privacy than the other, dialogue is important. “A good next step is setting clear boundaries together, like agreeing on whether to post at all, or deciding if faces will be shown.”
The psychologist also noted that even though Harry remains firmly fixed on the matter of his children’s privacy, those feelings can change over time. She revealed that the trick is to keep checking in with one another, which would allow them as parents “to feel respected and confident in the decisions they make together.” Harry has also spoken about the need for privacy for his children in many interviews. During a sit-down at the New York Times 2024 DealBook Summit, he told journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin, “I very much enjoy living here and bringing up my kids here [In US],” before reiterating that his kids have the freedom to do things that they “undoubtedly wouldn't be able to do in the UK.”
Dr. Hafeez’s claims about Harry’s reluctance to showcase his kids online were also echoed by royal expert Matt Wilkinson. As reported by the Daily Mail, he said on Hello!'s A Right Royal podcast, “My understanding of this or up to a certain stage is that Harry would much rather his children were not seen. He's got this idea that if he takes them outside of Montecito, there's a horde of us out there trying to take pictures of his kids.” He added, “I think Harry's living in [like things are] the way they were when he was a child [...]” The expert also argued that Harry ‘would much rather' his wife not include photos of their children in her brand promotions.
