Princess Kate Pokes Fun at William’s Picky Eating in Latest Outing: ‘I Had to Learn the Hard Way’

For all the rules and protocols that the royal family has to follow, the Prince and Princess of Wales, who recently returned to public duties, sometimes let the ray of normality slip through in conversations and cheeky jokes. During their recent visit to the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (WI) in Sunningdale, Kate Middleton, in her freshly lightened brunette hair, admitted that her baking skills are not safe from the biggest royal critique, her husband, Prince William.

Seated at a long table with members of the WI, the couple sampled an array of homemade treats, from chocolate brownies to orange and Campari cake. In a clip that made the rounds on social media, William was seen leaning forward to give his verdict on the brownies. “The brownies are…” he said, making an 'okay' gesture with his fingers before adding with a grin, “I know my brownies.”
Middleton couldn’t resist chiming in. “William is very fussy about brownies,” she told the group, laughing, as her husband nodded in agreement, adding, “Very fussy about brownies.” The fuss, it turns out, is over one controversial ingredient. Turning to one of the bakers, William asked, “Do you put nuts in them?” When she replied no, he lit up and declared, “Never put nuts in a brownie!” Middleton burst out laughing before confessing, “I had to learn the hard way!”

William has long been known as a confident cook, and with that comes a certain level of pickiness. In an earlier interview, HELLO! reported, while filming A Berry Royal Christmas with British icon Mary Berry, Middleton had confessed, “He used to cook all sorts of meals. I think that’s when he was trying to impress me, Mary. Things like Bolognese sauce, and things like that.”

The visit was a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who had deep ties to the WI, serving as its president for 19 years and remaining a member for more than 80. For William and Middleton, it was both a nod to the late monarch’s legacy and a moment to enjoy the everyday traditions she cherished. Food, it seems, is a running theme in the Wales household. Prince George, their eldest and second in line to the throne, has already revealed a passion of his own. Norfolk restaurateur Desmond MacCarthy recalled how George lit up during a visit to his Wiveton Hall Café, pointing excitedly at a wood-fired pizza oven. “That’s what I want to do when I grow up!” the young Prince reportedly exclaimed.
If George were to pursue that dream, it would mark a striking departure from royal tradition. For generations, heirs to the throne have followed a military path, but insiders suggest George might be allowed to carve out a different future. For now, William and Middleton appear intent on giving him and his siblings the freedom to explore ordinary passions, passions they would love.

During the latest outing, the couple also shared a few candid insights into family life. William noted that George isn’t quite as serious as he sometimes looks, though “he knows how to behave in public.” As for their youngest, Prince Louis, William admitted with a smile that he can be “a bit of a handful.” The doting father also added that the same day Louis had picked up a musical instrument and was practicing; however, he did not reveal what the instrument was.
