Prince William and Kate Middleton are no strangers to enthusiastic crowds hurling their names in excitement. During a recent visit to Scotland, the Prince and Princess of Wales were caught off-guard by one such excited well-wisher. As they stepped out of a building, a fan boldly called Middleton ‘beautiful’, right in front of William. But it was the Prince's witty comeback that stole the show, leaving royal fans in stitches.

The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the official naming of the ship, HMS Glasgow, on May 22. During the tour, Middleton gave a short speech and released a bottle of whisky, which broke against the ship’s hull, as per tradition. As reported by People magazine, a video on Instagram captured the couple passing by fans who had gathered to catch a glimpse of them. The fan in question shouted to Middleton, “You're beautiful.” Realizing her snub, she added, “You too, William!” William, who heard the fan, quipped, “You don't have to say that. Don't worry.” As the crowd burst into laughter, William placed his hand on Middleton’s arm in a sweet gesture.

As the awkward fan interaction went viral on X (formerly Twitter), fans couldn't help but say the same thing. A royal watcher commented, “Unfortunately, William gets that all the time ?.” In a similar vein, another penned, “This happened also at a BAFTA if I remember correctly??.” Meanwhile, a fan chimed, “William actually said you don’t have to say that?.” As the comments poured in, a netizen penned, “Sorry William, but your lovely lady Princess Catherine was flawless today ?. She was the star ?.”

Others praised the Prince of Wales for not being insecure and letting his wife have the spotlight. A netizen commented, “William is not threatened or jealous. He is so proud of his wife, as he should be.” Another echoed, “No, I think he’s proud of his wife, and agrees she’s beautiful, and isn’t jealous over the attention she gets. They are so evenly matched.” A royal watcher compared the Waleses' healthy relationship to that of King Charles and the late Princess Diana's tumultuous marriage. They opined, “Bet he doesn’t get jealous though like his Dad did with dear Diana!”

William’s cheeky reply mirrors his response at the 2020 BAFTA Awards. People magazine reports that as the royal couple arrived, onlookers reacted to how beautiful the then-Duchess of Cambridge looked in her gold-and-white Alexander McQueen gown. The outlet reports that one enthusiastic fan, Maciek Zielinski, yelled, “Oh my goodness, Kate, you look beautiful!” Zielinski followed that up with, “So do you, Will!” The Prince responded with a hearty smile as Middleton burst into laughter.
