Prince William Revealed a Side of 'Granny' Queen Elizabeth 'The World Didn’t Often See’ in New Video
Prince William recently shared some fond memories of the late Queen in a video for her evolving digital tribute.
The late Queen Elizabeth was certainly one of the most influential figures in the history of England. A singular figurehead who carried the country from chaos into stability over her 70 years of reign. An evolving digital tribute was established on her centenary birth anniversary this year, where people and public figures were encouraged to share their thoughts about the beloved queen. Naturally, her grandson would not miss an opportunity to honor his 'granny.' Prince William shared a new video as a tribute to her, offering a deeply personal glimpse into his memories of the Queen and joining others in celebrating her extraordinary life and legacy.
The late monarch was famously fond of dogs and horses. So much so that the two animals inevitably became an indelible part of her public image. She was also a skilled equestrian and often took part in horse riding. The Prince of Wales shared that being with the horses brought out a side of her that the world often didn’t see. “Watching her ride her horses in the Great Park, even well into her later years, showed a side of Granny the world didn't often see – off-duty, relaxed and utterly at home,” he said.
Perhaps one of William’s most famous and cherished memories with his grandmother was when he would have tea with her at Windsor while studying at Eton College. “Whilst I had the privilege to know the late Queen better than most, some of my fondest memories of my grandmother are from here in Windsor. I remember many a quiet afternoon, having tea with her and my grandfather at the castle, chatting, sharing stories, and seeing how completely at ease she was here, surrounded by family and her much-loved dogs and horses,” he said.
William added that spending quality time with his grandmother has inculcated a love for “teatime” within him, as he said, “To this day, she's given me a love of teatime that I never knew I needed.” While the Prince of Wales might be the monarchy’s face for a modern era, he will also seemingly carry values he has learnt from the late Queen.
Interestingly, now William’s own son, Prince George, is set to start his secondary education at Eton, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, Prince Harry. The 44-year-old, who now lives at the Windsor estate, will certainly be flooded with his own memories when he goes to drop his son at Eton for his first day later this year.
William concluded the emotional message by saying, “These moments with my grandmother are ones I'll always hold dear.” This year, the UK celebrated the late queen’s 100th birth anniversary with special events on April 21st.
