Prince Harry’s UK Security May Finally Be Reinstated — But One Sticking Point Remains

Insiders say approval is 'nailed on,' but warn one final intervention could still derail the breakthrough.

For a prince who famously walked out on his life as royalty to preserve his freedom, his fight to return to the UK and reclaim his state-funded security has necessarily had an element of irony. But at last, through so many disappointing legal battles and backroom deals, Prince Harry finally catches wind, and the tables are finally turning for him. But, while Harry may feel his taxpayer-funded security is on the verge of being restored, as early as weeks from now, one thing can derail the breakthrough.

The bone of contention here is the request made by Harry regarding automatic armed police protection whenever he travels to the UK. After losing his legal battle in May 2025 over the same, the Duke of Sussex has not yet retreated from the fight. Instead, he submitted a written request directly to the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, seeking a reconsideration of his security status. All this was conducted while he was visiting the UK for the WellChild Awards, since he was accorded police protection services only for one day, with a stalker getting close to him twice during the visit. Harry has always reasoned that without adequate police security, he and his family would not be able to feel secure within Britain.

According to the Daily Mail, those concerns appear to have found new traction. Sources close to the Sussexes claim that a fresh risk assessment has been carried out by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), the body responsible for determining protection levels for senior royals and other high-profile figures. The outcome, they suggest, has already been decided behind the scenes. “It’s now a formality,” a source said. “Sources at the Home Office have indicated that security is now nailed on for Harry.” But, this comes under a big condition. Despite the officials being on the same page, sources say that “the only thing that could scupper his approval now would be an intervention from the Palace,” emphasizing that the matter of security is intricately linked to Firm politics, notwithstanding that it is several years since Harry announced that he was stepping back from royal duties.

In his letter to the Home Secretary, Harry reportedly told the ministry to 'abide by its own rules,' as, for example, the rules stated that the risk management board had to evaluate every member of the royal family, as well as other VIPs, on an annual basis. Interestingly, the last time he was evaluated was in 2020, the year that he relocated to the US after stepping down as a senior royal.
