Prince Harry Opens Up About His Life in Emotional Speech: ‘I've Spent the Past 7 years in Litigation’
In a touching speech, the Duke of Sussex reflected on the profound toll of growing up seeking privacy and its impact on his family.
Not one to hold back, especially when his family is in danger, Prince Harry has remained steadfast in calling out the media and its harmful impact on his family. On that note, he reflected on the profound toll of growing up without privacy during a keynote address in Washington, DC, on March 31. He also spoke about his ongoing legal battles with newspapers over their alleged intrusive approach, noting that pursuing such cases often came at a reputational cost for him, Meghan Markle, and their children.

The Duke of Sussex, who left the royal family six years ago to lead a private life, addressed the crowd at the IAPP global summit, an event focused on privacy, AI governance, and cybersecurity. There, he reiterated privacy as a 'foundational issue,' asserting its important role in underpinning the trust, safety, and stability of societies. He added, "Now, my connection to privacy, and the lack of it, begins in a different place than most. From birth. You may know that I've spent the past seven years in litigation against three media organisations in the UK over their systemic and unlawful invasions of privacy, as well as the cover-up of it, dating back to the early 2000s."
In classic Harry fashion, he insisted that his legal fight with Associated Newspapers was 'absolutely' worth it, despite seeking no personal gains. He stressed, "Unfortunately, I have come to learn that this exploitation has become normalized. That breaches of privacy have morphed into commercial tactics across industries, notably the tech industry, with innovations like social media platforms and advances in artificial intelligence." He further described how his legal battles impacted Markle, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet, saying, "In many ways, it comes at a personal and reputational cost for me, my wife, and our children."
Indeed, the Duke has never shied away from speaking about how the media reportedly ruined Markle's life, even tearing up in court while describing the same. As per The Guardian, during his witness testimony in January, he claimed that he learnt about ANL's alleged unlawful information gathering and private investigators 'in the last few years,' after he and the Duchess stepped down as senior working royals in 2020. According to sources who attended the hearing, he 'fought back tears' while addressing the court, saying, "They have made my wife's life an absolute misery, my Lord."
Unsurprisingly, he also spoke about how his life was often used as entertainment, without any respect for his privacy, since childhood. He continued, "Having my life, like others, commercialized in this way since I was a teenager, delving into every aspect of my private life, listening to calls, blagging flights so they could see where I was going… It was a time when everyone was in competition with each other." Meanwhile, ANL, the publisher of The Daily Mail, strongly denied hacking into Harry's phone or using unethical methods to obtain information, arguing that his claims were filed beyond the statute of limitations.
