Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were handed an unexpectedly sweet royal honor. The trio helped name a baby kangaroo at the Australian zoo. The kids chose the name “Cwtch” for the zoo’s newest eastern grey kangaroo joey. It’s a Welsh word that translates to ‘cuddle.’

The Australian Zoo made a public announcement regarding the same on May 7. Noted Australian conservationist and zookeeper Robert Irwin, known to be close to the Wales family, thanked the young royals in a new video on Instagram. He said, “G'Day! It's Robert Irwin here with a couple of my mates. This is, of course, the icon of Australia, the kangaroo, and I'm very proud to announce that my friends, the Wales family, helped us to name our beautiful new joey.” Irwin made the announcement while sitting beside a kangaroo family. The choice of using a Welsh term for the name also appears as a subtle nod to Prince William and Kate Middleton, who hold the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales.

Irwin then revealed in the video why the name suited the joey best. He described Cwtch as “the absolute perfect name," as kangaroos at that age “love a cuddle.” They also spend most of their time in their mother’s pouch. He, then, gave a shout-out to the royal family siblings and continued, “I want to say a particular thank-you to Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte for your help in finding this one a brilliant name," while also emphasizing the importance of wildlife conservation, something he has in common with Prince William.

The adorable moment instantly created quite a buzz among the fans of the royal family and the Irwins. Robert’s mother, Terri Irwin, also commented under the joint Instagram post, which was in collaboration with the Wales family account. She wrote, "So special," with some heart emojis. Robert then released another statement saying, “I absolutely love the name ‘Cwtch’—it couldn’t be more perfect for this little joey. I am so thankful to have received special assistance from Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis with the naming. Cwtch is already stealing hearts, and I hope she inspires people to fall in love with wildlife and want to help protect it.”

This moment was a subtle nod to the longstanding relationship between the Wales family and the Irwins because of their dedication to environmental work. Robert plays a major role in Queensland’s Australia Zoo alongside Terri and his elder sister, Bindi Irwin. He is also an ambassador for William’s Earthshot Prize. As per People, during 2025 London Climate Action Week, he couldn’t help but praise the prince’s environmental legacy. He said, “I think Prince William is certainly creating an amazing legacy for his kids and for an entire generation to take inspiration from. I have no doubt that they'll carry up that mission.”
