One Senior Royal Remains a Strong Support and 'Trusted Confidant' to Charles and William
After Prince Harry and Andrew's exits, King Charles and Prince William relied on one loyal and committed royal to help with public duties.
After Prince Harry and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's much-discussed exits from the Firm, King Charles and Prince William found themselves carrying more responsibilities on their already burdened shoulders. In time, however, the monarch and the future king came to rely on one loyal and committed royal to help share the load. According to royal expert Robert Jobson, Prince Edward emerged as Charles and William's go-to person and strong support, thanks to his years of quiet service and scandal-free image.
Speaking to the Daily Express, Jobson revealed that after Mountbatten-Windsor was barred from undertaking royal duties, the King relied on Edward to shoulder duties shared among the younger generation. He said, "In Edward, the King has found a trusted, steady hand—dependable and discreet—supported by his equally grounded wife, Sophie. Together, they present a wholesome, scandal-free image that has quietly bolstered the monarchy's relatability in modern times." He added, "He [Edward] has stepped up at a time when Charles and William need loyal, experienced support—and Edward delivers it without fuss."
Against that backdrop, the royal expert argued that Edward would also guide the Prince of Wales when he ascends the throne. He stressed, "When William becomes King, Edward is likely to be a trusted confidant—someone he can bounce ideas off in private with a direct line to the wisdom and values of William's grandparents, the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip." While his early days in the royal family were unstable owing to multiple career changes, Edward's future now seems bright as a senior royal. Alongside representing more than 70 patronages, he assumed responsibility for overseeing the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme after his father stepped down in 2017.
Chiming in, royal expert Ingrid Seward also explained Edward's important role and presence in the King's life. She opined, "The King has always been fond of his young brother, who was far closer to their father than Charles could ever hope to be." She continued, "Ed, as he was called, got along well with Philip, and they worked very successfully on the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards Scheme. Until Edward took over. Charles knew that he would be a trusty pair of hands." Regardless of Edward's strong position in the Firm, his children, Lady Louise and James Wessex, continue to be non-working royals, focusing on their education.
Jobson and Seward's comments came the same day as Edward's 62nd birthday on March 10. To mark the occasion, the royal family posted on their X (formerly Twitter), "Happy Birthday to The Duke of Edinburgh!" Currently, Edward's most notable royal roles include The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, the National Youth Theatre, the British Paralympic Association, the Commonwealth Games Federation, and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Through these roles, he supports programs that promote leadership among young people, champion performing arts education, and encourage inclusive sport and community engagement across the UK and the Commonwealth.
