Before Meghan Markle joined the royal family, she made her thoughts on the 'pomp and circumstance' of royal life clear. The Duchess of Sussex, never afraid to share her unfiltered opinions, offered her take on the media frenzy surrounding Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding. In a resurfaced entry on her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, Markle criticized the pageantry of the Waleses' nuptials, and the public’s obsession and conversations about Middleton. Interestingly, seven years after commenting on the Waleses’ nuptials, Markle had her own fairytale wedding to Prince Harry

As per The Express, in her blog, she wrote, "Little girls dream of being princesses… I, for one, was all about She-Ra, Princess of Power. For those of you unfamiliar with the '80s cartoon reference, She-Ra is the twin sister of He-Man and a sword-wielding royal rebel known for her strength." She continued, "Grown women seem to retain this childhood fantasy. Just look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal wedding and endless conversation about Princess Kate." Her pointed shade implied that she had better role models than a royal princess.

Markle's blog was part of a profile on a descendant of Libyan royalty, Princess Alia Al Senussi. She firmly made it clear that she was more about being a 'royal rebel' rather than 'Cinderella.' In the 2022 Netflix show, Harry & Meghan, the Duchess opened up about running her lifestyle blog before meeting Harry. She said, "I've never really been the type of person to do only one thing. I guess that's how my website was born. There was fashion. There was tons of food and travel…And The Tig wasn't just a hobby. It became a really successful business." Funnily enough, Markle and Harry earned the nickname 'royal rebels' after infamously stepping down as senior royals in 2020.

While the Duchess of Sussex was not a fan of William and Middleton’s wedding, the Prince and Princess of Wales were happy for her when she married Harry. A month before the 2018 royal wedding, Middleton gushed to reporters, "It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together. William and I are absolutely thrilled...it’s a really happy time for any couple, and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this happy moment." The Princess also congratulated her sister-in-law after the arrival of Markle's second child, Princess Lilibet, despite the Sussexes' exiting the royal family and moving to California.

But behind the scenes, Markle and Middleton were never on the best of terms after the Duchess joined the royal family. Harry detailed multiple tense incidents between the two royal women in his memoir, Spare, once claiming that Middleton made Markle cry over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress days before her wedding. He revealed that he and his wife clashed with William and Middleton even before their nuptials.
