Meghan Markle Finally Confirms Those Rumors About Her Paris Fashion Week Appearance
Meghan Markle has finally cleared the air on her much-dissected Paris Fashion Week cameo in October. In a new and very personal interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she admitted she invited herself to Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2026 show to support the newly minted creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. And it was not a PR moment, but she did it to cheer for her friend who was stepping into a major moment. That admission alone punches the weeks of speculation that followed her October 5 appearance, which was her first trip to mainland Europe in 2 years. Then, several theories had been swung widely, about her being a top-tier guest flown in with great secrecy, or she’d somehow slipped herself into one of fashion’s most elite rows. But now, clarifying all of it, she stated it was neither.
Unlike the theories swirling online, she had a very unglamorous explanation. “I reached out and I said, ‘Happy to come and support you’,” she explained, later adding, “We kept it a secret, and it was really fun.” Piccioli had only just taken over at Balenciaga, and Meghan had worn his designs for years, enough for her team, at the time of the show, to describe their relationship as “the culmination of many years of artistry and friendship.” In a statement, they shared, "Over the years, the Duchess has worn a number of designs by Pierpaolo. They have worked closely together, collaborating on design for key moments on the world stage."
Earlier, the Italian designer had shared something similar, and it matches Markle's version. Speaking to The Cut, the Italian designer recalled, “Meghan and I met some years ago, and we've been texting ever since. She reached out and said she’d love to come to the show.” He went on to stress that there was “no strategy or big orchestration,” adding that he kept her arrival quiet because “real surprises are rare, and this one was beautiful.” Markle stepped out in a crisp white ensemble that caught the attention and approval of Anna Wintour.
While Piccioli’s account paints the appearance as a simple show of support, a very different version of events has been floating around. A source told columnist Rob Shuter, in October, via his Substack, that Markle’s front-row moment “wasn’t an invite — it was a transaction.” According to this insider, Balenciaga was chasing global buzz, and “Meghan delivered,” but only for what they described as a seven-figure payout. Talking about the same, a source had earlier joked, "She’s not walking the runway, but she’s still the most expensive ticket in Paris." "Balenciaga wanted global attention, and Meghan delivered," the source also said.
The source also claimed she allegedly requested the full celebrity treatment as part of the deal, “a private jet, a five-star suite, a glam squad,” the works. Her team, they said, approached the show with the intensity of a film premiere. As for why Piccioli played along, the insider suggested he saw her presence as a way to polish the brand’s image at a crucial moment.
